current engine 46k needs valve job and carb sync.
    82, xj650 Frankenbike
    last engine 69k
needs new timing chain, so I'm going to rebuild it while its out, for a spare engine for when the current engine gets tired. I figure with the two engines I could keep the bike running indifinatly.

    let's start with:

    1981 550 Seca: Now at 27,000 miles.

Got it with 18K miles, a rusty 4-1 Kerker with an open megaphone, congealed front brake fluid, broken signals, ripped up seat, "new" chain per the PO that he never LUBED (ever!) "new" battery that never had its water level checked, front caliper dragging, leaky forks, valves long overdue, carbs never cleaned, mouse nest in airbox, rear brake shoes coming apart-- AND HE WAS RIDING IT!!! (it did have a set of relatively new tires on it.)

    -Replaced exhaust system with stock.
-cleaned and sync'ed carbs, set float levels.
    -installed inline fuel filter.
-new fuel line and vacuum line.
    -new air filter.
-packed intake manifold cracks with black RTV.
-replaced all broken and corroded turn signals.
    -all new signal bulbs.
    -repaired fuse box.
    -had seat recovered.
-new front fork seals, and "newer" ff springs from my '83 (7K miles only.)
-rebuilt caliper, new pads; installed stainless lines, flushed and bled system (M/C ok, miraculously!)
    -front rotor ground and drilled.
    -replaced rear shoes and springs.
    -new Progressive 12-series rear shocks.
    -"Euro" bend handlebar.
    -new handgrips.
-new clutch cable to go with lower handlebar.
-all new sidecover grommets and mounting rubbers.
    -adjusted cam chain.
-new valve cover gasket and donuts.
-valve adjustment (6 of 8 were tight.)
-R & I alternator cover to clean, and inspect brushes.
    -replaced poorly repaired clutch cover.
    -straightened rear brake lever.
-new control levers (ends missing off both.)
-oil and filter changed regularly now.
-new spark plugs (every 3000 miles or so.)
-LOTS of stripping, cleaning, polishing-- it was stored outside for over 4 years by PO, with only a tarp over it during the winter.

    THEN I was able to actually start riding it, which begat;

    -tach drive oil seals replaced.
    -refurbished instrument cluster.
    -installed LED instrument lamps.
    -new speedo cable.
    -R & R speedo drive gearbox to clean/lube.
-installed Hella H4 halogen headlight upgrade.
    -new chain and sprockets.
    -replaced sidestand switch.
    -replaced starter solenoid.
    -installed clock.
    -replaced battery.
    -clutch rebuilt at 22K miles.
    -installed headlight modulator.
-new vacuum port caps and clamps.
    -replaced choke cable.

-currently needs a new rear tire.

And that was the "easy" bike. The list for the '83 (lower miles, lots of sitting) is nearly twice as long...

My 1982 XJ550 Seca has around 42K miles on it. I won't even go into all the work that has been done to it in the last 2 months. LOL. If you want to see some of it check this out: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=28198.html

Still a lot to do but she is up and running. :D

15,000 Just broke-in 85 XJ750XN Other than the infamous petcock nothing has failed except me for not taking better care of it. My younger brother brought it new. He passed away in 89. His wife gave the bike to me. I was living in B.C. at the time, but moved back to Washington. Tried to get it through the border legally, what a joke that was. So I just said I going on Vacation and rode down. Haven't been able to get it titled here yet. Just a matter of writing a letter to Washington D.C. Head Office of EPA & ask for a waiver. Because Yamaha did not do a spec for the EPA Canada did not require it. That what the Factory told me when i contacted them. So it has not been rode enough to suit me. Thanks to the U.S Gov for their Bail-out for H.D. who didn't REALLY need it.

I got my '82 750 Seca in '86 with 1700 miles on it. Had intermittant probs with the speedo & eventually 86ed the Atari altogether. Speedo at that point showed 68K. Used it for the next couple years with no speedo at all, then put one on from a Honda 750. Got another 15k out of it then. So I got at least 85k from the stock motor without a major engine problem. I thought the gears went out, but after some checking its probably just a bent shifter fork. 3 petcocks, 1 starter solenoid & a re-wire of the fuses are the only replacements it needed, aside from general maintenence. The used replacement motor had 20k @ install & runs strong! I guess I'm pretty much sold on these XJ bikes!!!

    1982 XJ650RJ 11,110...oops! I forgot about yesterday...make that 11,120 miles
Battery, Plugs, Oil&filter, Air filter, Fuse block (in the mail), HID headlight, rear brake, front brakes are next on the list

6th gear would be nice for the expressway, and a front fork cover below the headlight

    1983 Maxim XJ750- purchased April 1987 w/4700 mi
    Full original Fairing/Trunk/Bags
1st motor- 57,000.. something broke in the trans not allowing 1/N/2 shift very easily... Figured if I HAD to split the case- I'd want to completely rebuild it... cheaper to buy a parts-bike than repair
    2nd motor from 22K bike ($250)... now has 43.9K

so the "bike" has about 79K

XJ650 Seca 53784 miles. Rear shocks have been replaced, they were shot. Haven't done anything with the front forks but I should, nor have the valves been adjusted. Head set bearings got notchy and were replaced with taperd bearings. Misc electrical problems. The Igniter box was susceptible to taking on moisture and would cause a bad cut out, fixed it by sealing it. The fuse block was replaced. Several relays went bad. Replaced the alternator. All of the switch gear on the handle bars need attention or replacing. Currently have no spark, just starting to trouble shoot that. Edit: The problem turned out to be a bad pick up coil so that has now been replaced.

I've had my bike about 2 years now and on the road for one. The first year I got it I did a complete tear down/rebuild but left somethings for later. The original speedo said 78,000 miles on it when i first got it. I have since added about 8,000 miles. Not bad for one canadian season. I am working on replacing a lot of the crucial parts this spring before the new season now that I have the time and can't drive it due to newly arrived snow.
