People thought I was crazy to pay as much for my 650RJ as I did, but it was well worth it for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, I love these bikes, and finding one in near-perfect condition with only 8K on the clock was a rare opportunity, especially here in the U.S., where relatively few were sold.
Second, the advantage of buying a bike that is in excellent shape is that you save a ton of money on the back end, particularly when it's an extremely well-built and reliable machine to begin with. My bike has run perfectly since the day it was delivered two years ago, and other than a suspension upgrade, tires, and routine maintenance, I have spent virtually zip to keep it looking and running exactly the way it should..
That said, there is an exhaust issue that has come up this Spring (rust in the crossover unit) that is going to cost me a couple of bills to address properly, but overall, my Seca 650 has provided tremendous bang for the buck.
Money spent over the winter: 0
Money spent so far this Spring: Maybe $175.00 (new plugs, new battery, engine oil and filter, air cleaner element, fork and final-drive lubricant).

I probably spent more on paint then I did on parts. I figured I have over $2000 in accessories on my other bike, so this one is my cheap bike and I like making most of the stuff if I can or getting it from other bikes in salvage yards or Ebay. Cheap is good!

    Well I started with :
    1 slightly used 83 Maxim 400 = $ 900
    1 set of sprockets = 100
    1 set of brake pads= 45
    1 chain = 45
    1 oil filter and oil = 25
Several cans of primer and paint (had to redo it 3 times, DON'T ASK) 40
    some fuses = 5
SEVERAL cases of Nova Scotia's finest Brewskies = LOTS
All said and done I guess around the 1300 dollar mark!

Oh yeah, I never included the 430 dollars for my safety course, and not to mention the insurance..

Can't really commiserate with the rest of you. I spent a couple bucks on some fuel stabilizer and distilled water for the battery.

I did by some cable splicers but ended up not needing them, so they don't count. ;)

I bought my maxim x for 500. bought a full stock exhaust for it, wiring harness, air filter, battery, tires, guages, all new fluids, had the tins painted, stripped the entire bike and repainted the frame and everything else that needed it, polished a ton of stuff, mirrors, grips and who knows what else. I know for a fact that I have at least 1800 into it total, oh, and had the both seats and the backrest recovered. The bike will look as close to new as possible in just a few weeks.
