    Don't take this as gospel since it's from another (non-XJ) bike, but when I had this issue with 3rd gear (on a CX500) it was damaged dogs on the gear pair, not selector trouble. I managed to find a good replacement box (in a blown engine) for that but I did hear that in some cases a rounded dog can be reprofiled & undercut (like a dovetail join) so it "pulls" further into engagement instead of spitting into a false neutral.
