I'm 19yrs old and i'm looking to get my first motorcycle. I love the look of these older bikes and i found a guy selling an absolutely beautiful (then again i guess they all are) 1985 maxim X with 16K miles on it for $2900. Does this price sound reasonable?
Also, do ya'll think i'm getting in over my head with such an old bike? is this going to be more of a chore trying to find spare parts and accessories or is it such a dag-gum reliable and fun bike that tinkering here and there is all thats needed? thanks for your help!

    Location?

Bike prices vary by region alot. In Nova Scotia that might be about right, but getting near steep.

In the States that is likely too high - sure it's an X and sure it's beautiful but there are other bikes out there... I think you can find a better beginner bike for a better price.

My old bike has been more reliable than when I had new bikes... the XJ's are solid solid bikes.

I agree with Woot, that's just a little high for the states. That bike didn't sell for too much more new. I bought my Seca in 1983 new for $2700 in Memphis. It is a good solid bike though. Very fast and it will demand your attention. I would highly recommend a MSF saftey course.

Good bike, a little high on the price unless it is spotless and kept in a glass case. I'd low ball him with $1,900 after a through inspection of the entire machine. If he balks at you looking it over very carefully, walk, there are other machines to be had and he's probably trying to hide something.

thanks guys for your input, i ended up getting the bike. and i got it for $2600. according to what yall are saying that still might be a little high, but the machine really was in excellent condition and the guy had no problem with me looking it over and probing for information. he let me ride it around and made sure i was happy and confident in the bike. so far i've really enjoyed it and once again i appretiate your advice. i've posted a picture of it if you'd like to see it.

Congratulations on your new toy! Sounds like your off to a good start, now get into a rider safety class as soon as humanly possible so you can learn some good habits before you form bad ones!

Yea a little bit high but not that bad. Congratulations on the purchase! Do what Robert said and you won't be sorry. That bike will really fly!!! So be careful with that throttle for a while.

welcome to the insane asylumn bro! LoL! No just kidding, these guys on this site are great and very helpful. Sounds like you got a rock solid bike.I saw the pic you posted...Its in excellent shape from my view point. My maxim x wasnt as nice when I bought it, I paid $1300.00 but when its all said and done I will have another $500.00 put into it. Enjoy your new ride, and yes remember these things go like a banshee so, be careful!
