imagine this, another carb (?) issue

    1985 maxim x. 18xxx mi. Runs, just does not like to start when cold. Carbs were off and cleaned. Mixture screws are at 2.5 (adjusted last night). Bike is a real joy to get started. Doesn't like to be started witout having the throttle cracked with the choke on. Doesn't like to idle, even with the choke on, and when it does, it does so about 750rpm. Even after she is warm, she doesn't like to idle at 1100rpm for more than say a minute or so. The carbs are coming back off here over the winter, I just want to know what to look for. She is totally stock, save a k and n filter. thanks in advance.

    Three words: fuel enrichment circuit. Search for this term and I think you'll find your answer.

    I'd agree with Gamuru, but while you have them off, I'd also make sure they are bench synced, and then gauge synced once you get them back on the bike. I had all sorts of starting problems until I they were synced properly and totally clean.

    Look into building ( or buying ) a manometer, and ( if applicable ) a YICS tool.

    Also, I thought the recommended default for mixture screws was 3.5 turns out?
