In Defense of the Clymer 550 manual

    and despite the whole section on points and timing adjustment (!) the procedure in the Clymer book for replacing front brake pads is way more practical than shown in the factory manual. I'm not talking about a caliper rebuild, just replacing brake pads.

    I would much rather pop the whole caliper/holding block assembly off the fork (Clymer) than I would remove the front wheel and fender (Yamaha -!!!) for that procedure. C'mon now. And I still can't quite figure out the reasoning behind removing the fender...

    So for someone completely new to 550 Yamahas, it looks like the best practice is to have both a factory and the Clymer manual. And study the recommended procedure in each for what you want to accomplish.
