Interesting info on air filters

I know it's not exactly xj technical info, but it does apply, especially to anyone considering pods. I found it quite informative.

They mention it at the start, but the key point is:

In most circumstances, a freer flowing filter won't really do much because you're not drawing enough air through the filter to cause it to start restricting flow.



But yeah, I spent some time with various cars and bikes trying different air filters, and never found any noticable SOP dyno difference in power. If any did give more power, it was so slight as to be totally unnoticeable even when I really wanted to find it - such as after trying a rather expensive K&N filter in my Sierra.

What I didn't know is what a tremendous, insanely huge difference there is in filtered material between the bigger name brands and K&N. Good lord.

I'm putting a stock filter back into my Sierra tomorrow.

 

Yeah.....it's right up there with the 'My pipes are waaaay louder, so I got waaaay more power now......" , when the reality is more like "my pipes are waaaay louder now, so I like to THINK I have more power, But actually, I'm just more DEAF, and my neighbors are more mad, and the little old lady I just passed now has a coronary issue

 

I had a cold air kit on my old Civic- it was the only intake that would fit due to the engine swap. The biggest boost in hp I got was due to the fact that I would floor it more often because it made this wooshing noise as it sucked wind. Damn I miss that car.

 

On my '62 Impala 283 V8 you could turn the air cleaner cover over and rebolt it on. It would still seal the paper airfilter, but had a 1/2 inch opening all around the rim to draw air instead of through the tube. Sure sounded cool when you revved the engine.

 

Cooler intake air does help.
Another thing I saw a many years ago was the pressurized air box system that appeared on many sport bikes . entire intake including carb vents was fed air from a forward facing snorkel that helped proved more air the faster you traveled . Does work very well as proven with dyno runs with leaf blower simulating the air pressure at speed

 

That's pretty much all sport bikes from the 90s onward. I've got a 2000 GSXR 600 SRAD (Suzuki Ram Air Direct), but it really makes a difference well beyond legal speeds.

I had to make my own UNI filter for the Turbo Seca because no one sells the paper ones anymore, and it pumps almost twice atmospheric pressure . Speaking of which I should probably clean and oil it for my 1000 mile round trip in a couple weeks!

 

Sorry, I was misleading. It was a "short ram" style intake. Air was drawn from under the hood, just through a cone filter and 2.5" tube.
