One morning, riding to work on my ZRX1100 at just north of 100mph on a 4 lane highway, i came around a slight bend and saw TWO deer in the road ahead. One full on in the slow lane and one full on in the passing lane, just stopped, broadside, staring at me.
In the split second i had to react, i had to decide to lay it down, or try and aim for the middle of them.
I chose the latter, since it gave me a chance.
It worked. I split them like a deer sandwich at probably 90 mph.

You never feel more alive than when you almost died. Every nerve ending tingles and you're HYPER alert and even euphoric. It's like a drug, the adrenaline rush you get. If you're not careful, it can become addicting.
Looking back on my youth, from the lens of my 44 years, i have no logical explanation for why i'm still alive....

One of my favourite bikes was a TT500E which I used for daily road transport, knobby tyres, loud exhaust and all (a bit younger then) ... came around a corner at about 50mph, just got upright and straight and a big german shephard came charging out from behind a car, and went straight under the front wheel. As the front wheel hit the front of the bike went straight up into the air, then the back wheel hit and the front went straight back down again. There was a big kick in my backside as the back wheel went over the dog and then the bike was back straight ahead and it was like nothing ever happened !! I still can't believe I didn't come off. Not sure how the dog was but I wasn't hanging around for an argument with its owner. By the way my sig is a true story following an incident in Mackay on the same bike !!

In my fifty years of wondering how i got out of that alive.Seeing better people go before me playing it safe .I can only put it all down to fate "when it's your time it's time" Not to say go head and temp fate. But live it to it's fullest on one wheel or two

    Amen to that, Brother!

But you know what's worse than effing deer? EFFING COWS!! Especially a whole herd that some dumb-a$$ farmer let wander out of his field and onto the interstate! Oh yeah... And it seems that most often the dumb-a$$ farmer lives just past a slight rise in the road so you can't see the cows til it's just about almost nearly too late.

But that's probably mostly a Vermont thing.

    Now, back to wheelies.

I've lifted the front wheel on my X a few times, mostly just a few inches under really hard acceleration but I've done a few nice lofty ones. My most memorable wheelie was on a friend's V-Max though. I guess I underestimated its power vs the weight and length and I was taken a little by surprise when it went almost vertical. At least it felt that way...

No kd5uzz, it didn't work but it brought a wry smile from the magistrate !! With unlimited legal funds I could have gotten off it but they saw the loophole and decided to change the charge to dangerous driving, for which I was found guilty, had my license suspended for three months and find a few hundred bucks. But it was a cool wheelie, third gear as I recall ... easy to do on a TT but no good for the valves and rockers.

I just stood mine straight up today w/o trying, well,I was KINDA trying.
I wanted to practice my launch technique,in case I get her to the strip this year.Found a backroad w/no traffic or homes around.First couple launches the wheel came up a few inches, but the bike was perfectly under control, nice and straight

Next few tries it was fishtailing all over the road, couldn't even get my feet back on the pegs.It was flinging me around like a rag doll, felt like I was about to be ejected right off the side of the bike.Front wheel stayed planted on the ground thru all that

Well,I guess after all that spinning, the back tire was heated up and ready to bite, cause then I tried one while rolling.Didn't check the speedo, but I'd say I was going about 10-15 mph, revved her up a little, popped the clutch, and straight up in the air she went 8O

Since the most air I got till then was maybe 4 or 5 inches,I wasn't expecting that at all.Plus, after 30 years of riding, and occasionally attempting wheelies, this was the very first time I got more than a few inches of air on a street bike

Scared the living crap outta me.Convinced that I was about to be crushed under 1/4 ton of hot steel,I panicked and closed the throttle instantly, slamming the front end down.
Don't see any sign of damage.I figured at least the fork seals'd be blown out,but no signs of leakage

I thought for sure it was gonna go all the way over on top of me.
I think if it weren't for the high stepped seat,I woulda fallen off the back, lol.
What a rush!Even tho I thought I was gonna be squashed like a bug,I was giggling like a schoolgirl all the way home, and then some

I dunno if I should start a new thread for this, but i think it'd be interesting to hear comments on how to launch a bike w/o having it flip over on ya,besides installing a wheelie bar,lol

Oh,almost forgot, totally smashed my "boy bits" too 8O

Don't mess with him guys. He's got "uber boots" and he probably knows how to use them.

Reasonably and prudently is the most sure way there is to keep from getting injured. Even then it is sometimes not enough.

Persons with an IQ over 80 would agree that you stand a greater chance of getting injured when both wheels aren't on the ground. The severity of any injuries incurred increases without the gear.

My hope is that people who ride without ATGATT have good insurance so that they don't become sponges off the rest of us. Think long term disability!

Having 35 (+) years of riding under my ever expanding belt,I am very confident in my motorcycling prowess. I can make the rear tire leave the ground consistantly...every time I put it on the center stand.

It's pretty interesting sitting back and listening to the different views on riding styles, levels of risk taking we are all willing to take, and the various levels of invulnerability we each feel we have.
With my job I get to see the result of it. I work for ICBC in Vancouver. More specifically, Driver Licensing.
Apart from seeing the vehicle damage of "unexpected" crashes (have never had anyone say they expected it to go wrong), it's the impact that few seconds has on the life of the rider and there families (your families) that is the most painful to see. The number of people that attend my office annually after having to go through rehab just to be able to drive at all, is a wake up call.
We had one young woman who was in to re-qualify for her driver license after 10 years. Yes you heard right. It took her 10 years of re-hab to get to the point of being able drive again. She was a passenger, her boyfriend was killed. By the way, she is now 34 years old!
So yeah, we all like to feel the rush, isn't that why we ride in the first place? Just remember that something as small as a rock in the road, a crack in the pavement, or a small furry critter (I love small furry critters :) ) can bring a few seconds of fun crashing down and turn it into a life of pain.
So if you are going to do it, ATGATT. Be safe, we don't want to hear about any riders going down.
    Just my thoughts..
