IMG_20140920_180902_563.jpg I lowered my 82 xj650 I used a route that most guy`s do not want to try, That is I cut close to 2" out of the fat end of my shock springs, For me this worked great I am 5 foot 9 inches 185 lbs and I now can sit flat footed at a stop. Did not notice any issues with handling or steering,
No bottom out either, I left the front at its stock height. But also replaced the seat. I do not plan to ride 2 up so also removed passenger foot pegs, Put on a solo seat.
Oh B.T.W. My shocks now measure 11 1/4 inches center of hole.

I wish I did.. it was a mess of fluffs from shaving the seat down
I will however take pics when I redo the seat this winter
pretty much I plan on tracing the gel pad, then cutting the depth
    of the pad
pretty much before I shaved it
I looked at the shape I wanted.. then cut it with a jigsaw
removed the cover and kept cutting
the shaving was simple and there are plenty of youtube
    videos to help you
I think the actual shaving part took me 20 minutes
and it does not have to be perfect
since I covered it with the yoga mat
it smoothed out in the end
