I was wondering how much metal dust evreyone notices when they do there oil changes. I change my oil about every 1,000 miles and my filter abouy every 3,000. Last couple of oil changes, I notice a fair amount of metal dust on the magnetic plug.I know some is to be expected but not sure if I am getting enough to warrant an internal investigation.

It's normal. The gears in the engine and transmission will shed tiny particles of steel throughout their lives, and Yamaha provided the magnetic drain plug to help catch them.

The metal dust looks like the amount you might find on rear diff truck plug with about 10 k on it though. This is every 1k for me.

Yes, and that's a gearbox also: it has one gear pair, while your XJ's engine has at least seven pairs of constantly meshing gears.

A magnetic drain plug is SOP for any gearbox whose manufacturer wants it to last a long time.

It's normal to have a little sludge buildup on the magnetic plugs. All the bikes I've owned over the years had them and there is always some amount of metal particals stuck to them when I changed the oil. I always wondered why they didn't do the same thing with cars/trucks? So I started to just put a heavy magnet on the oil filter to catch any particals (just left them there till I changed the oil)) Then I noticed when I got my Accord, it has one on it.
