So I am out in the garage since it is 34 degrees out today so bearable in the garage.

I was going to take my spark plugs off to get a new set and the first three come off just like they are supposed to, the simplest task ever, and look like this:

    top of plug:

    inside the cap:

But then i take cyl #1 off and the top of the plug looks like this: :(

And here is the cap from that plug:

It looks weird, not just like the part that twists off the top of the plug is stuck in there (which I couldn't get out) But it looks completely different.

Can anybody tell what is exactly going on here? I am thinking I might need a new set of spark plug wires, but I think there is a way to just get a new one for that one plug and splice it in?

Any input would be much appreciated!!

Don't worry at all, the spark plug boot will screw right off the wire.

Unscrew the old boot, trim the plug wire back a half inch to provide new wire, and then screw in a new spark plug boot, easily sourced at a local powersports or autoparts store.

The center pin/screw of the boot screws right into the wire core of the coil wires.

Just unscrew the boot from the wire and it will all make perfect sense.

Then just bring along the old boot to match up the angle you need.

Thanks mtnbike crazy for the reply, I was just coming back to write that I just learned of that haha. That's great though, easy fix!

Now on to other little projects to get the bike ready for spring :)

It looks to me like a PO changed either 3 of the plug boots or the plug wires to the automotive style. What is on #1 is what would have came with the bike. It doesn't hurt anything to run it like that, but you might want to switch things so all of the plug boots are the same, just to make things not so weird.

Might be worth it to measure the resistances of the plug caps to make sure they weren't replaced with something out of spec that will affect your spark (and test your coils while you are at it).

Good catch, I thought it was weird to have the little screw on part still there, I haven't seen any motorcycles of cars with them before

thanks guys, yeah I thought it looked different under the #1 cap.

It was weird because i thought the part that screwed onto the plug was just stuck in the cap, but I couldn't get anything out of there lol.
