I discovered a missing bolt. it looks to be the rear motor mount or an exhaust hanger, not sure which. at any rate, can anyone here identify and tell me the size of said bolt?

That is the center bolt for the collector box mount.

It's kind of important; without it your exhaust system is hanging from the headpipes and the muffler mounts.

The bike in the pic is what, a 650 or 750? Josh has a 550. However:

It matters not. The bolt itself isn't just a bolt, it's either a shoulder bolt or it goes through a spacer. For both series of bikes, the concept is the same: the mount is a "sandwich" of rubber mounts, above and below, a sleeve with the bolt through it and large washers. How it was accomplished is slightly different, check the fiche for your bike: http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oempart ... ycle/parts

If that bolt is missing, you're going to experience a whole heck of a lot more vibration (and beat the crap out of your exhaust gaskets in the process.) I'm surprised you haven't noticed any rattling and banging.

BEST BET: Get ahold of chacal, and get the proper parts to rebuild that mounting point. The rubber rings are first cousin to valve cover donuts, replace those and make sure you have the correct sleeve/washer and bolt to do it right. It's not expensive and worth the effort.

It is the bolt the hold your muffler tight to the frame.......the bolt goes up thru and screws into a nut that has the curve piece you see in your pic.....this appears to be a 650 or 750.....a must replacement.....or like fitz said....your entire exhaust system is being held up by the headpipes....& where the exhaust collectors bolt on to the sideframe.......

The bolt that you are missing give it more stability......REPLACE IT......
