Its not so much what he said, but the little bitty piece of wood he shoved in the behind the choke lever so the enrichment circuit would not close all the way. It drove me nuts till I happened to notice it after I cleaned my carbs.

My first bike, the XJ650J: "Runs great, but needs some TLC"

Needed ether to maybe start, choke to try to keep it running, new tires front and rear, major carb clean (despite having been cleaned), fuse box messed up with fuses that came of out the slots while driving, one inline fuse that wasn't connected properly resulting in ongoing headlight problems ...

But Hey!! The price was right ($500), I learned A LOT and had loads of fun getting it running. It did have only 9K miles, but needs paint. At least the gas tank had been cleaned and sealed.

    "It runs perfect".
of course it had been run and still warm when I git there to buy it. Let it cool down on the way home in the trailer and guess what. No start and carbs plugged with dried gas.

"It was leaking alot of Oil out of the airbox drain, So I took off the crankcase breather hose and blocked it off at the crankcase with a plastic baggie and a clamp cause It was my only transportation! "

2 replaced holed pistons and rings later... I still have a slight drip from the crankcase pickup coil cover...

Dude you are one short away from a major melt down. Get a new fuse box and extention wires from Chacal . Unhook your battery untill it comes in.

I can't complain. My co-worker was totally honest with me. He made me no promises, he helped me re-assemble the bike and getting running so I could ride it home (just up the street). Price: $300.00

I have that and then some in ebay parts and riding gear.

I must have had the PO of the century by the things you guys have said in the past and in this thread. I showed up the bike was dang dusty felt it and it was stone cold. He said I meant to clean it up but didn't get around to it it has been in the barn since last fall. The dust told me there was no oil leaks sweet, he kicked the choke over and it started right away(and has everytime since Knock on wood). He told me the story of the 1st owner gave me an original yamaha service manual, throttle cable(tho he thought is was a clutch cable), 4qts of oil, an oil filter that he bought but didn't change yet. Included the old title the original owner couldn't find when he bought it but later mailed it to him. When asked about the dent in the tank, yup it fell on the trailer. TOld me about it being cold blooded (and it is it likes to be up to temp to run it's best even after a complete clean of the carbs) I did find the #2 diaghpram not seated correctly. But he was very honest about everything. I do need to run back down and show him the bike all fixed up.

Hello !!! There should be FOUR decapitated bolts in the fuse box ! Looks like a great way to set your paints on fire.

The clips on the other 3 were obviously broken - the PO just taped those together. Didn't even bother with wire nuts. What a maroon!

"I just cleaned the carbs, so all it needs is a sync."

Let's just say that after buying a new set of carbs, he was right for that portion. Then there was the overheating problem once it was finally running.

It's running pretty darn good now, so for the price I paid no complaints. I just need to get the cosmetics done and 2nd gear fixed. But I've gotten pretty good at going from 1st to 3rd now.

Besides, it was really about the zen like experience of becoming one with the bike anyway.

That's insane! Using a over-length, rusty threaded stud is just plain foolish.

It should have been treated with something to prevent corrosion, as the electrical resistance through that circuit must be horrible.......

Your fuse box looks great! My whole wiring harness looked like that, no bolt for a fuse, just loose/broken connectors taped to the fuses and floating around in the fuse box, the PO said it ran great a couple months ago but because the battery was bad it wouldn’t start. Talked him down from 500.00 to 300.00 and drove it back over the pass from Seattle to Spokane. I wasn’t too worried if it would run or not because I had an engine with only 1214 miles on it sitting at home. I pulled the leaky oily engine, wiring harness, coils and dry rotted loops off the bike and started putting all the parts I have been carrying around with me for the last 27 years that an ex-in-law made for me when he took my almost new XJ750 Seca out for an unauthorized ride around the block that ended in him totaling my bike. Any way I’m reliving the dream and with all those parts and some help from chacal when my plastic and tank get back from paint I will be riding my almost new XJ750 Seca again. :D
