I was in the process of removing a stuck broken head bolt and the casting around sheared away. I will now be looking for a new block. Until then what ways of repair can I go about?

About the only way I can think of fixing this properly is TIG welding, drilling, and tapping.

Nothing else is going to hold long enough to be worth the time you spend on doing it.

I have 2 XJ650's and luckily only 1 of the bikes - 1 carb boot bolt was snapped. I attached the pic of my quick repair, quickly placed it back on the road!
Look great? - no but who is going to see it- it's a 43 yr. old bike!

The next guy who owns it after you.

You will join the inglorious ranks of "previous owners" mentioned in many, many threads here.

Head off, take it (the cylinder head, for that's what it's called) to be tig welded and rethreaded. $100 job, plus your gaskets. You might find someone willing to weld it still on the engine, but that makes re cutting it flat and threading it a free hand job, risky.

I don’t plan to get rid of the bike but would like it proper to avoid vacuum leaks.

Not sure where you were going with that. Are we having some kind of a contest?

I just offered my opinion of your suggestion. I get to have opinions, same as you.

Sometimes people don't like your ideas. It isn't a big deal.

The goal, I believe is to secure the intake boot securely to avoid any vacuum leak. I have successfully done this. Anyone that entertains the idea of welding and/or removing the engine from the frame has most likely lost all track of time and sensibility. My opinion.

I think presenting all options to the owner is valid.

It is then up to the decision maker (owner) to decide if they want a bush fix to get back on the road or a “proper” fix.

I think all bush fixes should be disclaimed as such and made clear to the decision maker that eventually they will need a proper fix, even if obvious.

People have lots of different parameters when making these decisions. And let’s face it, the easiest way to fix a lot of our problems would be to buy a shiny new bike, but that ain’t happening.

Personally, I am still running the bush fix of replacing the outer throttle shaft seals without redoing the entire rack. Now I KNOW I am living on borrowed time, but I’ve been happily riding around for a couple years, and it’s on my list to do a full rebuild. No big deal. I took the cheap easy way out to buy some time for the proper fix. It’s just another thing on my list I need to do. I’m doubtful that I will ever complete said list. That’s ok.

Most important, let’s keep it positive.

You can't tell me what to do. You're not my real dad. :D

No one said anything about removing the engine.

There are multiple ways to deal with this kind of a problem. Some people have done welding, some had it done for them. Some people went and replaced the head with a good used one. There is nothing unrealistic about it - search this forum, there are lots of examples.

I didn't even say you shouldn't do it your way. I wouldn't do it that way, but it's your bike, whatever, you do you. Krazy glue the manifolds on, for all I care. I just said not everyone is going to like it.

I really don't understand why you think your bodge is beyond some very mild criticism.

    Lighten up, Francis.

What happened to keeping opinions to yourself? Or is that only for other people?
