Hope this is the right place to post, first timer. I'm trying to resurrect a 1981 Yamaha XJ550 with forks that aren't original. People have told me the forks I have aren't saveable. I'm a bit of a rookie with these things, so I'd love to simply replace what was there knowing it'll fit and go on from there. The problem is I can't identify them beyond a doubt. So I'm asking, from the pictures attached, any ideas?

Next option is fork conversion with something newer. The list online of possible fits is crazy long. Recommendations welcome.

    Cheers

Interesting - at first glance they look like Euro twin disc forks with a US wheel adapted with a second disc. Now I'm not so sure. What is the slider the lower part of Fork2.jpg - relevant?

Whatever they are, they can be serviced. The stanchions aren't pitted, and unless the bushings are both worn-out and unavailable they can be put back into working order.

Look like XS750 forks to me. Definitely NOT XS1100 though. See the webbing where the mudguard attaches, that's like the XS750.

Oh, that’s another set of “unknown” forks, air shocks. They’re leaking. I’d attach a pic but I don’t want to confuse the thread here.

These extra pics may help. Yes, there seems to be a drain at the bottom. The brake calliper has “sumitomo A8K A21 GG” on one side. This help? Didn’t find much on Google.

That is a brake caliper for an XS750.

Hi. Perhaps someone here can advise me. I recently replaced the front end on my 82 xj750. I bought the replacement on eBay, advertised as xj750 front end. However , having switched the parts and replaced the front wheel, now the brake disks look too small. The calipers barely grip the rotors. Can anybody tell me, are there different calipers, rotors for the xj750. Thanks

Thanks for all the great and helpful input, everyone. Please keep this thread going, the more the better. If I had to swap forks, I was thinking something shorter, a complete front end. Might be a safer bet as rebuilds and replacements for this fork (xs750 seems to be the leading opinion) are proving to be a challenge to find. Thoughts welcome.

Personally I'd put XJ750 forks on it, seeing as it's an XJ750 (particlarly if it's a SECA, as the anti-dive is an improvement over simple damper-rod forks).
Rebuilding the XS750 forks is a viable option, but they are a generation older.

If you wanted to spend some real money you could fit an R6 front.
