It's the same as the pots, it's high temp' black, but it does dry to a charcoal look. I must say that I walked round it for a while, until I decided that I liked it, it looks sort of understated, I think I will do the headers to match, $20 a can, against $250 for jet hot.

I wouldn't do it. I have never ever ever EVER seen ANYTHING in a spray can that will last more than one season (if that) on an exhaust system. Most don't last more than 10 minutes. If you're planning to keep and ride this little gem, I'd do the jet-hot, and consider it a one-time investment.

It looks gorgeous by the way, and the "high temp" should be just fine on everything else.

Sir Wizard, First, this is gorgeous craftsmanship and an inspiration for all us common folk. Now that I've greased the skids a little I just have to know the answer. It is very rude of me to ask, but what the heck.

Would you be willing to give us an estimate on the number of hours you have invested into this project so far? And do you have a feeling for how many hours you will have spent on it by the time the project is completed.

You have already shared with us how much you have invested in AU$ but like everyone there is always an imbalance of time and money in my life.

I have the money but don't seem to have the time. I have had times in my life when it was the other way around. Not sure which way I like better..........

One last question. Do you use punches to make the holes in your gaskets or do you just drill them?

Hi Wamaxim, thanks for your interest.
I picked the bike up on 11.11.08 & since then have put 150 hours into it, that seems a lot but pretty much most of the bits have been finished, wrapped & packed. I don't knock myself out on it, if it becomes tiresome, I walk away from it, it's only a hobby.
I am starting an extention for a freind of mine, next week, so the bike will be on hold for a while, I don't mind as I have got the project to a nice clean, put back together stage, which is the fun part.
I marked the bolt holes with a 6.5 auger, then cut round with a craft knife, I am looking for a hole punch, I used to have one with about 6 different sizes on it, but it seems to have been lost in the mists of time.
I could probably spend that amount of time again to finish it, you can never tell, it might all go easy, then again.......Wiz.

I've been thinking about a set of these to use as gaskett punches. They are for leatjer but they cut very clean holes with one short stroke of a mallet. The first thing I noticed on the picture where you repaired the side cover was not the repair, which was very nicely done, but the way that the gasket material extended just beyond the edge of the cover. I figured they must just cut the gaskets a little larger south of the equator until I read further.

I really like the look and the price has got to be significantly less but what a PITA to cut out all the holes. This would drive me nuts!!!!

BTW the cost on Amazon for this punch set is less than US$15

Did you paint the final drive or is it polished aluminum?
If you painted it, what kind of paint?

    Setback.
I have been blaming the dog for cocking his leg on my front wheel, all week, but on closer examination he is passing fork oil.
    New seals required.
The project is now officially going backwards.

Hello there, I'm a new member. Its been quite sometime looking for help for my Maxim 700. I watched eflat7's Maxim 650 Chopper at youtube and it was really over top nice. I was wondering if I can do the same with my maxim700.? Where can I get a frame or how do I modify the original frame? Can you give me tips or specifications on how to do this

I had a dog one time that was passing rubber bands. REALLY embarrassing phone call from the vet on that one.

Wiz, if seals might be cheaper/more readily available on this side of the pond, say the word. I got the boots from http://www.ronayers.com/ Let me know.

Back on track now, fitted the new fork seals, air box, carbs, battery holder & coils.
The XJ is easier to work on around the carbs, one word sums it up, tight.

    one word: beautiful

you know, unless parts are hard to find, you really ought to find a new cover ... that blemish really takes away form the beauty and value.

I tried a new method of polishing a case, went lightly with a bushy wire brush, then cutting compound & RickCoMatic type buffer (6 discs of scotch pad) then Mothers ally polish. It's not a mirror finish, but you must agree it is very passable & took only an hour.

ya that wire wheel really takes all the cruse off... but it leaves circles, but once you get those circles removed via scotch pad or sna dpaper, looks good

and kitten cutting compount... very ncie name, coincidence? I think not!

The case looks great! There are a lot of spots you don't WANT a chrome-like mirror finish, and that's looking like one of them.

    That cover is strangely familiar...

That textured finish is stock, it's like a brushed look, not much I could do with that.

The perils of purchasing used parts from another country.
I got an ignition switch from the U.S.A. same year & model, it had exactly the same physical appearence, however the wiring is totaly different, see picture.
Does anyone think that I won't be able to make this work?
