Was browsing through the modification threads and didn't see too much for the 83 xj750 maxims. Everything seems to be stock on this bike, it has 18,000 miles in great shape and got it for $900. First off is that a decent price? I wanted to know what you guys thought about getting more horsepower out of the maxims. I thought about a K&N filter, jet kit, and exhaust (But I do not like loud exhaust at all, closer to stock the better). I looked on ebay for a filter and they are about $50 or so and I don't have any clue about exhaust types or even where to find a after market jet kit. If there are other things to do to tune this baby up I would like to know about it and if you have links to places to purchase thats even better!

    Welcome to the forums!

$900 for a good condition running motorcycle is a great price - doesn't matter what it is! For a 750 Maxim, that's a really good value.

First thing you should know is that the 650's and 750's engines are nearly identical. Only difference is displacement. All the above performance mods that you've mentioned is do-able at a good price. If you do the high-performance air filter & aftermarket exhaust, you WILL have to install jet kits to keep the bike from running super-lean.

    Other good tips:
    - Replace the crappy glass-type fuse box with a modern ATO type - search for threads on it here.
    - Replacing coils is an excellent upgrade - Dyna coils are a favorite, DC1-1 is the part number.
    - With that, iridum plugs are also an excellent upgrade.

Thats a good thing to know the engines are almost identical. Whats the purpose of replacing the fuses? Does it change much? Same question for the coils.

Fuse box is because the stock fuses & fuse holder are exposed and corrode, and because glass fuses aren't as reliable as the newer ATO fuses. Eventually, like most of us, you WILL have electrical issues with it, and likely one of the holders will break off when you try to replace or clean the fuses -- thus necessitating the change anyway.

Coils - well the XJ's are known for developing odd electrical issues that in most cases can be traced to either:
1 - the fuse box - see above
2 - the TCI (ignition module - gets damp, stops working)
3 - the coils (get old, develop micro-cracks, either stop working or get funky weird when they get wet)

The Dyna coils have a much higher final voltage than the stocks (stronger spark), and are much more reliable.

Do you have a site where I can get the coils? Plus I was looking at the PODS air filter a lot of people are putting on. Are they worth the time?

In my opionion - no, pod-style filters aren't worth it. They cause nearly constant problems with carburation -- it'll take you weeks of playing with the carbs to get the mixtures right - if you're lucky. Some people have NEVER been able to get the carbs working right with pod filters. Others have gotten them to work, but it still took a LOT of fiddling and tweaking to get them right.

Don't have a link for the coils but I can dig one up - Ebay is always a good option though. You can usually get the pair for around or just over $100

    So will a xj650 k&n air filter fit in a xj750's box?

I run pods and an open exhaust on mine. I had a slight stumble at 2500-3200 rpm, but colortuned and re-synced and recolortuned and now it's perfect and screams. No re jetting. I guess it's a matter of personal preference and patience, and having the tools to get it right.
