    hey all i just got a 1980 650 with electrical probs galore. the po was havin probs so he started hackin. by the time i got it (for $100) there was no sign of power. i changed out the starter solenoid and got the button at least crankin it over but no spark. i then took apart the icu and say a fried circuit. i have a new one on the way but am nervous to plug it in and fry it too (it cost more than i payed for the bike lol). the whole dash harness is gone. there is no diode either. im not actually sure what it does, i know its a one way switch kinda but thats all. will it being gone not allow it to start? ive bypassed all the safety switches already. what about the headlight relay? do i need to go around it too? i just want to get it started then will start with the rewire. thanks

    btw anyone know where i can pick up a diode? what years/models can i use?
    none for a 1980 on ebay now

    the only diodes are in the voltage regulator. they are used to convert the alternating current from the bikes charging system into direct current.

    the diode is a one way resistor. current can only flow through one direction. there should be 6 diodes in the regulator/rectifier. 2 diodes per alternating phase. and there are usually 3 alternating phases from the alternator.

    there is supposed to be a diode block in the headlight bucket that im missin. will my bike start without it? if not where can i get one?

    You are correct, in addition to the diodes in the rectifier portion of the regulator/rectifier there is also a diode block in the headlight bucket.

    It contains all the other diodes on the motorcycle that are not part of the charging system. Off the top of my head I don't recall which circuits they are in, and it's too late to go weeding through the wiring diagram. It's a safe bet that some of them will be involved in the safety circuits that can shut down the ignition system.

    Here are the wiring diagrams so you can sort it out yourself.

    I suspect Chacal can come up with the diode block for you.
