No, not another "pods" thread but 4 pod-lovers, why not foam?

I'll admit that my XJ Turbo is now my only vintage bike that is a 4 stroke, all the rest are two stroke street bikes. I've already shared years ago here of our experience at the track with pods & CV carbs on our GT750 race animal so I won't be redundant.

What strikes me odd is that out of all the pics I see of the guy who for whatever reason, like to equip their engines with pod filters, I see none with the foam filters. It's odd to me because being a two-stroke guy at heart, we learned years ago that the hard rear wall of pod filters causes a reversion wave which hurts performance, a LOT.

Many of us in the 2 stroke world run foam filters with great success but even then, there are "correct" foam filters and "incorrect" which will choke the HP right out of your engine...many of us us RAMAIR as they produce the best power per dyno testing of friends in Australia and Norway compared to the others.

So that's my question for the pod guys....why not foam?

Not a pod guy but I would venture to guess that foam does not look as cool as the standard chrome/ metal mesh pod.

Not trying to be funny or snarky - that is my honest opinion - pods DO look cool, and I venture to guess that for some that convert to pods, the driving force in their decision making is mostly aesthetic.

I have given up on looking cool many many years ago . . . .

 

I wondered about that Stump but to me, screened Stacks look the very best....but I don't doubt your take on why not foam. I guess to me after racing for a few years back in the day, my mind is always "geared" for performance and not aesthetics but I also know that not everyone is a rubber stamp of me either...thank God<LOL>!

if the carbs pictured were CV carbs it would have gone a long way to claiming success.

problem with all the pods that are used in the threads is many do not ID the pods and then there is namebrand pods and cheapo pods.
big variable in the testing and outcome.
so listing the brand used would be helpful

in my 550 clymer manual in performance chapter stage 2 modes reccomend 29 Mikuni smoothbore slide carbs to be used with pods From a company called Specialists II
the base line jetting is for the 4 to 1 exhaust (supplied by Specialists II) and pods but then goes on to say rejetting may be needed.

 

From what i have seen here, people typically go with the cheap emigo pods cause they are cheap and they have chrome on them. Myself i run uni foam pods. They dont have the same issues as the cone shaped paper filter, but then again it comes with its own problems.

Foam filters to me are the best bet. My only concern is how well it filters out particulates. Fitment is great, no ridge issues what so ever. I just wish they came in a double layer.

I haven't checked out ramair filters for our bikes, what i would like to see is overall construction. Especially air flow. There is one filter that came out recently that i would love to review and that is the sprint waterproof pod filter. Its crazy expensive and is targeted towards racers.

 

I am currently shopping for a new old bike. Very tempted by an 82 cb750 supersport. One of the main reasons I haven't pulled the trigger is that it has pods. I've heard it running, it's pretty smooth, but in the back of my mind, there's a nagging doubt... If it gets too lean, ka-BOOM! Ain't no Matti got time for that.

Matti... that's more about getting a "new" bike than pods.... looks good to me at the price!!

Let's see, I think the formulas are:

Looking cool adds about 15 hp
Being a bit louder adds 10 hp
Being loud enough to annoy the neighbors a block away adds about 25 hp

Then there's Bhp-----BUTT horsepower
And finally BHp---- ButtHead horsepower

 

So would your corny joke be a direct result of BHp?
