I know everyone has made admiring noises about how good the valve seats look, and I agree they look to be a perfect surface, but its hard to judge scale in the pics. Are they not on the wide side? (I dont know the spec on that donk, but they look a bit wide)

Think automotive with that motor. Although you're right, the exhaust might be a tad wide; but I honestly don't think it will matter.

There is ONE problem though, Wiz--

It's too shiny. Neither of my SRs were that pretty from the factory.

What are you saying, Dark', they are not the right valves ? Personally, I like to see some 'meat' at the edges.
I hear ya, Fitz, the flywheel casing was in factory black & deeply scored & the sprocket cover comes from a donor bike.

Hi Ken, I hit all the rusty bits with the wire brush, in the electric drill, blast de-greaser into all the awkward areas, rub the whole thing down with 240 wet-dry, fill the chips, rub down again, wash it down with soapy water, rinse, allow to dry (hot air gun in the angles), then spray with a really good quality rattle can, I don't use primer, now, as I find it chips too easily.

Very inspiring work - - so much that I had to run out and buy a pair of XT 500"s in "basket case" form !!

I just don't see how you can sell these bikes when you're done.

    Hey Time to Ride,
Nice write up link on the carb! Very interesting to say the least. I like the way they broke the whole carb down and explained everything extremely clearly for a slow learner like me. Now if they would just do that with the Hitachi carbs on an XJ Seca 750 like that. Sooner or later I am going to have to tear into mine but it is looking more and more that before I get done with mine I am going to have to go through the entire bike. That's going to take a bit of time for sure so in my case I am going to have to first get caught up on my Honey Dooooo list so that I can have some Peace of Mind when concentrating on my bike. Hope that time comes before 2013? grunt 007, 81'XJ Seca 750 R, Mi.

I don't know anything about those bikes but I an curious. What's with the tank built into the top frame tube? I had a '77 Can-am MX bike that had an oil tank there, but it was a two stroke and that was the oil tank for the oil injection system.

Engine oil. It's a "dry sump" motor (the off road versions, the TT/XT came first.)

I had two SR500s, a '78 and an '80. The '78 was like the one Wiz is restoring, with a disc rear brake; it got smashed to bits in an altercation with a Toyota, along with my collarbone, 2 ribs and my leg. I replaced it with a 1980 model. The '80 had a drum rear brake, I swear the 550 Seca has the same brake. I sold it when kid #2 was born, but hung onto the Norton.

I sure miss my SR500s. They're more fun than you might believe; impractical as hell but a barrel of monkeys in the right circumstances (tight twisties or wet roads.)
