oil cooler renovation

    having just renovated my oil cooler lines.( the wow they're brass, )thread,.
    i turned my attention to the oil cooler

    it was in a sorry state

    so i needed some tool to straighten the fins ,as using any kind of metal tool is a big no'no'. i got a clothes peg and some wooden toothpicks

    then shaved the pointed ends of the peg down , till it fitted easilly between the fins
    [​IMG]

    then started to straighten each individual fin using the toothpick to lever the bent fin up , using the clothes peg to push against

    this took absolutely ages, but hey ho, the cost of a new cooler, :roll:

    got most of them reasonably straight, at least enough to actually do some cooling.

    then sprayed it with,, er, barbecue paint.
    after it dried i put it in a low oven for one hour, this baked it hard.
    i'm going to make a mesh grid to fix on the front, from either alluminium or stainless
    but at least its brought a part back into service

    Is it wrong that now I want an oil cooler more than ever, just to straighten the fins on one?

    The barbecue paint might not be the best idea. I don't think it'll harm anything, but there is paint that is specifically made for radiators/ oil coolers which has better thermal characteristics than what you used (costs about the same too).

    ha,ha. :lol: no quite the opposite, i couldnt find any high temp radiator paint anywhere ,thats when i saw the barbecue paint, read the tin, and thought it would be ideal , and its that matt/silk finish that i wanted £5.99 a tin.
