Oil warning

I changed the oil in my bike today. I normally use havoline (rotella-shell) 15w40. I decided to try the Havoline 10w40 High mileage due to the fact that I was not happy with the condition of the oil shipment we received at work and the high mileage came in sealed bottles. It might just be my mileage but I can honestly say that it is not good for my bike. I took it for a ride today and decided to get into it a little bit to stir the oil up and nothing good came from it. At about 5500 RPM's, the clutch immediately started slipping. I will be changing it again as soon as I can. My 2 cents.

 

"High mileage" oils for cars have friction modifiers that will make your clutch unhappy, as you've discovered.

Pull the clutch after draining the oil, and clean all the plates in solvent. Soak them briefly in the new correct oil before re-installing the clutch, new oil and a filter.

Cross your fingers...

 

I never liked automotive oils in motorcycles, I did some of that in the 80's for a short bit, it just didn't seem right. I only use motorcycle oil's, I think they are designed for the fact the same oil shares the engine, gearbox, and clutch plates. For about 15 year I've only used motorcycle Synthedics now and love it, when I changed I could really tell a smoother engine, and shifting gearbox.
