They just cover the ally' face of the caliper where the pads would rub.

    Aluminum.

But I don't think they clip to the calipers themselves.

On the 550s, the corresponding pieces clip to the underside of the caliper holding block, for the caliper and edges of the pads to bear against.

From the fiche, I'd say these are the same. They likely go on the UNDERSIDE surfaces on the caliper HOLDING BRACKET, where the caliper and edges of the pads would ride. They would clip UP onto the caliper holding bracket before it gets mated with the caliper. The caliper and the top edges of the pads ride against them under braking. That's where the wear marks come from, the edges of the brake pad backing plates.

    big fitz,
Ok getting clearer....like mud....I get the underside, I get the clips..I get the caliper mounting block.

I went out and tried to get them to stay "clipped" The are bent properly...no dice. Like I've said, the fell out when I removed the wheel/tire for replacement. I have no problem removing the assembly again, but I'd like to SEE the assembled bits before that.

This really shouldn't be all that frustrating. But it is!

So you figured out where they go?

Once the calipers and pads are properly oriented in relation to the holding brackets, those plates should be trapped. You can tweak the little tabs in a bit so they grab onto the edges of the "plateau" on the underside of the mounting piece.

Maybe you have them switched left for right. Look at where the wear marks from the edges of the pad backing plates are lining up when they're on.

From the drawing in the fiche (and in my Haynes of this style brake) the little clips go with the open side of the "U" facing forward/downward, and the side with no little "ears" on it toward the outside.

Does this help? Note NO "EAR" SIDE is to the outside, the red is the barely visible edges of the "plateau" the plate clips to--
