Just joined in today. This is my first post. I have had a Valkyrie for 4 seasons and it is a very nice bike. My 86 XJ750XS was my first love and I want her to have the best.

She needs some work. I put 40,000 km on the original 15,000 and since it was my first bike, it has become a bit bruised. She still runs extremely well but I am currently working on a tear-down and rebuild. While I am doing that I want to replace the old and somewhat decrepit exhaust and the thought of rejetting has been daunting.

Thanks to the comments in this discussion thread I am now ready to dive right in.

I am unfamiiliear with the term POD... but I hope I am correct in inferring that it is a replacement for the filter box ( I had been looking at a K&E filter setup). I have no idea what pipes to get.... any suggistions?

My 2 cents on the power thing.... my XJ has lotsl of power.... nearly pulled the front wheel off the ground in a hard shift into 2nd and scared the heck outta myself... but on the other hand if it had more that would not be a problem. I have come to appreciate all kinds of bikes and if I had the room and money I would have a V-Max, a CBR100RR a Ducati Monster, etc, etc, etc.

Thanks to all you guys who post here. I have learned a lot on my first day as a member.

Pods are individual filters on each carb. The stock airbox has to be removed. I removed mine without pulling the engine, but this caused some damage. If you plan on keeping the stocker, you will have to pull or at least move the engine. Once you remove the stock box, you will need to fashion a plate for the fuses to sit on. I also used this plate to mount a breather element for the crank case.

Thanks, Nachoman. Pull or move the engine... sounds drastic, but I would certainly learn a lot about the mechanicals that way. Any suggestions for the pods to replace the airbox? I am also looking for suggestions on the exhaust pipes to use. I would like to get good sound, and look good and if I get a wee bit of performance as well that would be a bonus. I see lots of bikes with Cobra pipes and they look good. I will try to find out if they have them for the XJ750XS.

I'm surprised to hear that you had so much trouble getting the airbox out. I've not removed the box on my regular Seca, but I pulled the one on my Turbo in order to get the engine out. While it took a lot of wiggling and several other parts had to come out, I was able to get it free without even loosening the motor mounts. The turbo box is way different though. The biggest help came from removing the battery box. That left enough room behind it to wiggle.
