    ( definitely ) not defiantly :D
Got the gunk cleaned out and wiring and sleeving is intact and in it's place.
I'm going to have to take the wiring apart and check it out like you recommended

I was messing around with the top pickup coil and now I'm not getting a reading like I was.
I had the screws loose from before so I messed with them a little.
Now I cant get it to short out again. Weird!

Yes they are, but they don't do that.

I will assume (in a good way) that moisture migrated into one or both pickup coils via the wires and you have an internal fault do to corrosion.
    Replace the pickup coil assembly.

Ya. It looked like there was a sub-aluminium lake in there.

Well I found some used ones. I wonder if these would match up? They look the same.

The pickup coils are part of the assembly. You can't buy them new anymore. The link is just to refrence what models of XJ to look for when you search for the used parts.

Yea off and on. When I turn the motor over sometimes it does and other times it doesn't .
I'm thinking of changing some stuff out on it
Will the painted screw that's holding the indicator have to be set a back certain way?
I'm guessing it's for finding TDC

The pick ups can be removed without disturbing the pointer. Yes, it's used to find TDC to install the cams/chain and to install the tensioner at C.

Yes it will. Yes it is for indicating TDC. Do you have a dial caliper? If not a wooden dowell will do. Find TDC via the top of the #1 piston (through the sparkplug hole), then set the indicator to the T mark on the ignition plate.

Of course you don't have to touch it at all to remove the ignition plate, so....

    Thanks, that's good to know.
I had just glanced at that part and was thinking I would have to
    remove it.

Well I had spark for a minute.
And then I disconnected the TCI and reconnected it.
Now I'm not getting spark again.
I put new ends on the ground and red wires to the TCI but that didn't help
Good news is the coils are good.
Just need to figure out what to do next

Check the fuses and make sure all other connections are good.

So today I disconnected and removed the pickup coils and reinstalled them.
I Didn't get a spark so I removed the black/white wire going to the TCI and got spark.
Got the thing running and with the exception of a gas leak she runs pretty good.
So with the clutch lever wire wired together, the kickstand up with or without the relay,
In neutral and the black/white wire disconnected she fires.
I have a feeling if I disconnect the TCI and reconnect it will not spark. I'm going to try it and see.
    Strange!
Thanks again for all the help
    Will

sounds like your sidestand safty relay may be a problem

the black white wire is to bypass the sidestand safety relay when disconnected fron tci .
if when you connect it you do not get spark disconnect the side stand relay and see if it sparks.

if relay seems to be problem it can be dissembled and cleaned
you can test side stand switch from the connector under the tool tray you can reach it going in over the lower fender you may have to remove the lower fender

Okay, so I had everything disconnected and it was running.
I connected the black/white and it still ran.
I connected the relay it still ran.
It was running and then a dead stop.
Disconnected the black/white again it fired up.
Could the relay be working part time because it's bored with retirement ?

open the relay and clean it
I would run it a while without relay see if the problem reoccurs.

also the clutch safety switch wires if you undo them bike will start in neutral and shift through gears it just wont start in gear when stalled at a stoplight.
disconnect them and run your tests again.

the relay is for sidestand switch and when you put the sidestand down in gear motor stops or if you put bike in gear with side stand down motor stops.
you could have a dirty side stand switch or bad connection in its harness

Sounds good, I'll run it without the relay for awhile and also clean the relay.
The clutch safety switch wires are wired together until I can get a new lever switch
