Rpgoerlich, yes they have diaphrams, you can see them in the bottom picture, in their numbered trays, I am having the caps chromed, that's why they are not fitted.

Well,I repaired the damage I did getting the drain screw out & am waiting for a 6mm x .75 plug tap from the States + a new screw, so I don't know if it is sorted, more a work in progress.
How is my NZ connection for parts progressing? Wiz.

At this stage of the strip down the bike takes on a very appealing rat look.

Hi Alive. I usually use a good quality rattle can for the small black bits, I warm up the parts to be painted & put the can in hot water for 10 min's.

hmmmm can in hot water... That's a new one, might give that a go.

I sprayed the 750 engine paint with a heat gun in one hand and spray can in the other.... Worked really well

I ALWAYS warm up rattle-cans in a bowl of warm water before spraying; it's a trick I learned years ago building model airplanes.

I use my heat gun to heat up metal parts before painting - not only helps the paint adhere, but it dries the part of any solvents used beforehand.

I also have a butane blowtorch that I use for curing exhaust header paint - this way you can bolt the headers back on without marring the finish (and limits the smokeout when you first start the bike up 8O ).

Oops - sorry for the minor thread hijack wiz - neat work as always

Brakes pretty much ready to go back on, after removing all the custard.
These are, of course, the opposing piston calipers, not the floating caliper used on the earlier XJs, this inovative design was taken from the Grand Prix bikes & was revolutionary. The modern high perfomance bikes use 4 or 6 opposing pistons.
You will stop eventually without either type of caliper, your deceleration caused by a combination of factors including aerodynamic drag forces, friction in the engine, gearbox, transmission and wheel bearings and the rolling resistance bteween your tyres and the road.

Good luck with it Wiz. I just overhauled my brakes too. Custard is a good description of the muck I found in the master cylinders. And dried custard in the calipers. I see you got the nice black painted calipers with the Yamaha badge. My front ones are just plain painted silver. I had to take them apart twice as I forgot to use the supplied assembly grease on the pistons.

Replacement 'piston rings' for the front fork damper rods are not to be had, so enter the $2 plumbing fitting, I will shave off 2# 3mm doughnuts & it's Miller time.

    Outstanding.

While you have those parts totally accessible, ... you can add Pin Stripe Decals or other Stripe Decals and Clear over them.

Hello, all you 900 aficionados, these 4 lugs on the front of the tank, are they for fixing a faring? & if so & I am staying buff naked, can I just give them a new zip code? Wiz.

The nekkid versions had oil cooler shrouds that mounted there (one on either side).

And I think the half fairing versions mounted the fairing there (?)

    No.
Those ate the Mounting Points for Plastic "Air Scoops"

OEM Air Soops are no longer available.
Being Mounted in those "Ears" with Rubber Grommets left them susceptible to falling off.

The Air Scoop was of an elongated-triangular design.
Deflector Panels within the Scoop directed On-rushing Air entering the scoop to the Canyon in the Head where the Spark Plugs fit.

The fuel tank on my XJ has those 4 lugs. They don't do anything. You can't see them with the fairing. The frame mounted fairing is on a mounting bracket, and some distance away from the tank. Here's a rather poor picture. The light wasn't very good today, and my phone camera doesn't have a flash.
