    Hello everyone,
    I am finishing up re-building a 81 xj750.
I have noticed that there are 2 wires on the left side of the bike near the gear shifter. One has a male insert and the other is a female insert. I have no clue what they are for or if they need to be connected. May someone let me know what they are for. thank you IMG_0208.jpeg IMG_0207.jpeg IMG_0208.jpeg IMG_0207.jpeg

There are two one for the neutral switch and one for the oil level sensor. Others are from the pick up coils black and gray and black and orange. Are your oil level light and neutral lights working?

I was able to find the neutral cable and i am getting a read on it. I dont have oil level reading. The neutral wire that i linked up to is a blue on near the rear by the clutch

Does the neutral light go out when you put the machine in gear? Yes the neutral light wire is blue. The oil level sensor is shown in this photograph. That connector goes to the harness, the harness wire should be red with a black stripe.

Yes the light goes off when its not in neutral. Okay awesome, the new speedometer i got doesnt have a location for oil level. Now the second wire, i have no clue where it goes as well.

The wire you circled goes to the cranksaft position sensors or pickups which send a signal to the TCI for the ignition system, TCI connector has a three pin plug. The sensors are under that left cover.

Your speedometer cannot be a factory unit then.

Correct, this is a project bike. I am using a aftermakret speedometer. I got this bike basically all beat up and i am trying to do a rebuild on it. This is my first time working on a bike. The beat up solver was prior and the brown is current. I had to redo all the wiring and more

There must be a way to fit an oil level light to the handle bar. Should be easy I think, I just have not done it.

Do i need to have the camshaft sensor connected? Its currently not. How vital is the oil level light? This engine has a see through window as well

If the harness is standard it is a matter of connecting a handlebar mounted light across the two wires shown here. You don't have a camshaft sensor if you mean the crankshaft position sensors yes they need connected. The engine cannot run without them connected.

Oil level light it's better if it is there but as l stated it should be easy to fit an external one. And yes you can check with the oil level window.

The bike is currently running with out the crankshaft sensor plugged in. This bike doesnt have the original harness. I had to create one from scratch to the best of my knowledge. So far it seems like everything is reading and i have tachometer that is reading properly. I really do appreciate all your help

The wires you had circled must be connected to the TCI. Without a signal regarding crankshaft position it cannot run. Are you mistaking the alternator plug not connected? It has a three wire plug. All wires are white.

I rode the bike yesterday for the first time and everything was working as designed. But i just couldn’t figure out what those 2 wires were to. There is a black and white wire from the tci that i dont know what it goes to as well and the black one next to the blue one i used to get the neutral read from.

The black wire with the white stripe is for the side stand safety switch setup. My bike would not start when l got it and l disconnected it and the engine ran. The PO must have bypassed the safety system on your bike.

What kind of air filters do you have on the carbs?

Interesting some people fit pod filters to their bikes and some stay with the standard factory setup including me. I am no carburettor guru but as I understand it pods admit more air than the factory setup leaning the mixture and larger jets are required to address that. My Honda CB 750 K2 had slide carburettors and I fitted pods and just changed the jets. But XJ's using CV carburettors are more difficult to get running well with pods. Mabe some of the carburettor experts will chime in. Just interested in the air flow rates between different pods and how they affect the engine in terms of getting it running well.

I re-built the carbs and got them synced up. Once i installed the pods after it didnt seem to affect the bike and how it reves or idles.

It did, you just can't tell because you didn't ride it enough with the factory airbox.

It is at the brake lever on the handlebar on my 900f. Check if you have an external switch with two wire connector.

Use a jumper wire across the harness terminals to see if the brake light works. Is the foot brake switch operating the stop light?

Did you try the jumper wire across the front brake switch terminals on the harness side. If that lights the bulb the switch should be faulty.

Get a Yamaha switch so that it is activated from the brake lever and wire it into the harness you have made.

I think i found something that will work. Also k was trying to bleed the front brakes and i took everything apart because it wound pump. There is a silver cylinder that acts like a pump for the brake fluid. What is that called? As i might need to replace it

That's the piston. If you are going to replace that better getting a master cylinder rebuild kit.

I got the rebuild kit today and got it dine. The pump is only working when i put my finger iver the too valve and it creates a suction. But it will still not feed brake fluid to the calipers
