Rear brakes.

I am putting new tires on and figured I'd look at the brakes while everything is apart. The bike had about 5800 miles on it when I got it and it's up to 8400 now. The brakes are likely original, have about as much lining on them as the new set I have from chacal, and the lining shows no sign of separation from the metal part. Shouild I keep using them or just put the new ones on? Also, the front pads have a lot of brake material left on them but the outside pad is a little thinner than the inside one. Are there any problems with the original front pads that came on this bike? It's a 1982 650 Maxim.

 

if you have them put them on. As cheap as brakes are might as well. You won't have to worry about them coming apart

 

I'm with cutlass on this one, you already have them, so might as well.

In this case I think the saying would be "An ounce of prevention is worth all the skin on your a$$"

As far as the front pads, yeah, they're probably ok, but modern pads and a clean disk would probably buy you another 20 feet off your stopping distance, not to mention the peace of mind.

 

REPLACE THEM. You already have new ones. Technology has improved; take advantage of it.

 

Yeah, and your life or at least butt is worth the 20 bucks or whatever, I'm sure your loved-ones would agree! But glad to hear you are out riding that thang and having fun!

 

Change them man. If those are originals they are 30 years old and can come apart at any time. If this happens while you are going highway speed..... well you know what..... not cool! Put on the new ones and throw those old ones away.
