Until recently I learned that meant Prime... :p as in to use to prime the carbs with I assume. Sooooo... I've been riding my bike ('82 XJ750) with it set to "Pri" and not "On" as it seemed that every time I would ride with it to the "On" position the bike would stall and not like to start up again.

Hence the natural progression from riding with it "On" to "Pri". I guess what I'm trying to get to is: should I be worried? It was always put away when done with it on the "On" position.

Any help or suggestions would be great as you all are really about all I have when it comes to anything XJ related. Half the people I tell what I ride have never heard of an XJ by Yamaha. Go figure.

open your oil fill hole. Does it smell of gas? if not then no problems.

You should check to see that your petcock is working properly in the on and RES positions. Use a vacuum pump or suck on the vacuum line to verify fuel flows.

Pri will leave you no reserve.

I usually set the valve to PRI as I roll it out of the garage if she's sat for a few days.

Doing anything sunday? we've got a ride planned leaving newark, de and making a big loop through PA and MD. Thread in the ride/rally section.

That would be an awesome run. I'm waiting on new ignition coils and I have to fix the new taillight I put on. I'll keep you updated. There should definitely be more grassroots bike runs on this forum.

I check out ChopCult and Biltwell's sites all the time and they usually have so much going on, but it's all West Coast riding. Anyway I'll post results probably tomorrow and get this baby going.

If it's dying in "ON" but running ok in "PRI" then you have a vacuum-operated petcock issue of some sort; either the vacumm line is off or cracked, or the petcock itself needs rebuilding: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=25058.html

Man please take some pix! Supposed to be a run my buddy is putting together going up through Lambertville, NJ and New Hope, PA. Doubt I'll even make that...my bike was running so good until it ran on 3 cylinders and i didn't realize that all I needed to do was reinsert my plug boot to the plug wire lol.

Fitz, the vacuum line and fuel line is new and do not have any cracks. I'll do as you suggest and check the vacuum anyway and I'm kind of thinking now that you mention it that it's more of a petcock issue. Thanks again guys you all are a great help!!!

P.S. I'm scoping out that link as we speak.

No gas in the oil...a small amount of gas on the inside seat of the R1 and L1 pods. Petcock to be removed and tested. Yes!

You don't have to remove it to test, pull the fuel line off & slip on some tube & run into a jar, pull the vac'line from the port on the carb boot, gently suck on it, if the petcock is ok the fuel will flow into the jar, if it isn't, it will flow into your mouth.

    1. The Level if the Tank might be too LOW to run on FUEL.

    2. The Hose might NOT be Vacuum Hose.

(If the levels too low, ... it will run on PRI until the tanks bone dry.)

Any objections to swapping out an old petcock and putting on a non vacuum operated one like the deluxe on-off ones that Chacal sells? Any pros or con regarding both? Petcock is getting tested tonight I'll post results later.

You need a Fuel System that 100% A-OK before you install a Manual Petcock.

If your Carb Floats seep, ... the 1st time you forget to turn the Manual Petcock OFF, ...

    You're out ... $25.00

If your Petcock isn't working, the thing to do is BUY A NEW ONE.
The Old one went beyond a Quarter of a Century without a hiccup.
You can find them Online for anywhere between $60-90.00.

The New one ought to be good for another 25 Years.

90 Bucks divided be 25 Years works-out to just about One-Cent per day!
