When you came up with the uni-shock mount, how did you determine the angle of travel and mounting locations? Seeing the angle and having it welded to the shaft drive makes me nervous. i think it looks super clean and your welds are awesome.

Initially shock was tack welded and we checked for sag with me on it. I rode it few miles so far and it felt fine, but its still too early to say how it will perform in extreme conditions. The place where shock hoop is welded onto shaft tube of swing arm is actually rather strong, plus it brakes swing up. I am no engineer but i believe it should work just fine, but once again, ill be able to report on it in more details once i am able to ride it for more than few miles.

I think your shock mount look's pretty darned close. I looked at (the bike in profile with a straight edge on my screen) upper shock mount to the rear axle center. It's pretty close to a straight line and that's with the bike unladen.

Got the seat made and picked it up today.
Still waiting on headlight brackets and dealing with exchanging mufflers.

The swingarm is quite stout. There have been many mono-shock conversions done without any issues coming from using the driveshaft housing tube in that way.

Picked up another SuperMoto today to ride while I am building my XJ. NO, I am not losing interest in XJ, it’s just taking me little longer to finish it due to parts availability and suppliers being unreliable.

Mounted headlight and finally happy with position and spacing of it.
If anyone has suggestions on 1.5” inlet short (12-14”) mufflers please chime in.

Did you buy or make the headlight mount brackets? As far as mufflers, what kind of sound are you after?

I bought mounts. Sound wise, as close to stock as possible. I know it won’t be as quite as stock but the quieter the better.

If you don't mind, I have a question? How long is the new steering stem on your donor forks? I have not taken the front end off my 82 750 Maxim to measure the head tube or the stock stem. I have my forks back from Race Tech all nice and new. My R1 forks are 2000 USD but with non-radial brakes.
    Cheers, 50gary

    I don’t mind at all!
I can’t tell you the length of the new stem but I know that it’s 17mm longer than original Maxim stem. Also I am using 2006 R1 front so I am not sure if the dimensions are the same as your 2000 front.

Well, finally sorted few things that were needed for safe test ride. Steering is definitely something that I need to get used to. So much snappier with new front end. Also speedo needs to be calibrated but overall I couldn’t be happier!

Just weighted in my bike and it’s exactly 420lbs wet. If online specs for this 83 Maxim are correct, that means I shaved 100 lbs off the bike. My initial projection was 40-60lbs weight loss but I am more than happy with losing 100 lbs.

I like the thought of the power to weight ratio now :)
