I've been working on an 81 XJ550 Maxim trying to get it running so I can enjoy the good weather. I've gone through the carburator and synced it,replaced cables, adjusted the chain and numerous other minor things. My problem is I finally got to take it for a test drive around the block which went fine. The next morning I went out to start my bike and there was nothing but a single click from the starter solenoid and it made my neutral light shut off. I checked fuses and and cleaned all the connections I could find. Also made sure the battery had power and unplugged and replugged in any spots where the wires came togethor in case there was any corrosion. Tried jumping the solenoid but all that did was make a spark and shut off all power again. It wont shift up or down either for some reason just kills the power when I try to shift. This is my first motorcycle and everything was going really smooth up until this point. Hopefully someone can chime in with an answer

I think killing the power when you shift out of neutral is kickstand down switch?

if you shift it into gear with side stand down you must pull in clutch . the safety feature will kill power to ignition if you have a bad or missing clutch safety switch
battery must be fully charged if it is to low solenoid will only click and if it drops below 10 volts when cranking bike will not stark

just having side stand down and shifting into gear may also kill the ignition.
my switch is disconnected. so my bike will only start in neutral and when I deploy the side stand bike shuts off

Maybe I have a bad battery then because the regular kickstand is up

Try jumping it with a car battery.

It was a bad battery because it turned over right away after i hooked it up to my car. Still doesnt explain why it wont come out of neutral though. I'm going to start digging through the forums for answers unless someone comments on here first. Thanks everyone I was really worried it was a wiring issue somewhere
