Near Macon, isn't it? Do you have an XJ?

    it runs
    86 Maxim
picked it up on craigslist about 3 years ago....been sitting in the shed
been riding a 2007 suzuki s40, but traded it in on a mazda tribute
so I had to get the maxim running
it had the jump out of 2nd gear issue
found a whole engine on ebay for 100 (plus 100 freight
swapped out the engine, replace the rear seat, replaced the battery,
    replaced the front tire
finally got a tag now all I need is tune the carbs, replace brake pads and shoes, hunt down side covers, replace the clutch switch, do some clean up and paint, replace the mirrors ...right side mirror is broken off

Bolingbroke is a quaint drinking village with an small antiques problem just north of Macon on US41. The Maxim is a lot better riding than the s40. Not near as much vibration. Not near as scary on the interstate.

If there is anyone nearby, I could use direction in doing the carb tune/sync procedure. looks like I got about 15mpg on the first full tank... Runs ragged at low speeds, but runs wicked fast at high rpms.

Sounds like a really gummed up rack of carbs. I initially got 30 mpg, but after cleaning and syncing, and valves I should be getting about 45. I have Hitachi 33's, but I could probably help with yours if you want to come to S GA. However, if you have any mechanical experience, there are very good instructions here and you can do it yourself. Just don't assume anything, clean everything, follow the instructions to the letter, and maybe, just maybe you will only have to do it once. By the way, my main problem with mileage turned out to be the pilot screw adjustments, which I am still slowly adjusting.

I think the issue is adjusting/tuning
I found a guy in warner robins that is just starting up a repair business ...mainly works on 4 wheelers and small engines....races 4 wheelers
I had already bought the carb kits and petcock kit
He took the carbs down, cleaned them, did the kits on them but didn't have the gages to do the sync/tune....got as close as he could with 'finger guessing'
It would cut off randomly just driving. I found that the ignition switch was busted and would disconnect when you hit a bump. Then found the bad connection on the generator that was failing to charge the battery. Now it charges and doesn't cut out...just got to tackle the carb tune. I bought the CD. The guy in WR has it still. I decided to repair the engine that we took out, and am waiting on the rest of the parts for him to re-assemble it after swapping out the shift drum and gears. Then I'll have a spare engine.

No. You are the first to respond within 100 miles. I actually got my XJ700 in Daytona, but I have seen one for sale in Brunswick last year and also one in Jesup. I almost bought a Cushman truckster in Guyton last week. Luckily someone beat me to it.

I have the XJ700N air cooled. I've completely rebuilt the brakes, added stainless brake lines, rebuilt the carbs, replaced the fork seals, and a couple of other minor things on my bike, which is totally stock. So, if you have any questions about those items maybe I can help. What do you have?

I am in middle GA. Should have my XJ 750J Maxim running right soon. Would be great to meet other riders and check out there bikes. My XJ isn't the cleanest but have ridden an XJ full time most of my adult life. I want an XJ 1100 some day. If anyone likes to camp I plan on doing camping this spring/summer. Would be nice to find another rider thatlikes to camp too.
