Starter button dead until you tap the right side cover.

    The person responsible for me getting a 1982 650 Maxim is having a problem with his 1982 650 Maxim. The starter button is dead sometimes but if the plastic battery cover is tapped on by hand the starter will begin to work. Any ideas? All I know is what he told me.

    bad connection on the battery, or on the starter solenoid, both of which are located under that panel.

    +1 on the solenoid going bad. For a quick fix, you can remove the long screws out and crack the housing open just enough to fit a carb or electronic cleaner straw in there and give it a good rinse. I did that to my Seca and have never had a problem since. Of course it's always better to just replace it...

    Try checking all your wires first. There is this blue wire with a white stripe on it thats connected behind the battery and connected to your Flasher. Every time my starter wont work its because that wire has come loose.
    My first prob with the starter was that the wires were not properly "pinched" so i re crimped them and make sure that blue wire was secure. Starts like a champ

    Maybe the little gremlin that cranks the starting is nodding off and tapping the cover wakes him up! :lol:
