Starter troubles

alllllright guys.. back with more trouble from my SECA... this time the starter is dead. i suspect i know whats wrong with it, but would like to get a second opinion from some other XJ owners.

My bike used to start with a little hesitation, and sometimes took come coaxing but once it turned over a few revolutions it would usually start right up! trouble is... now the starter doesnt work, and i cant bump start her, without a hill...

The symptoms went as follows, first the starter would like free wheel and make a clunk noise occasionally with out turning the engine over, (but this was somewhat intermittent and i beleive not related... but you never know!) anyways, then sometimes recently i would go to start the bike and the relay would click but... nothing! id try to bump start it, try again and this time the starter woudl kick. Then for a while i would use the "hold the buttona dn give her a whack" trick, which was working nicely, until yesterday when she flat out quit.

i suspect the brushes are done, however i would like to avoid getting raped by yamaha if possible... (30$ for new brushes!! thats half the way to a new ebay starter for little pieces of copper with a wire attached!) if she needs em, ill get em. but i'd hate to waste the money.

Sounds every bit like brushes. I paid $30 for mine but that came with a new mounting plate and I didn't have to solder anything. Still a bit pricey. The part # on my set shows 028530-5031 for the brush. May be able to find two of those fairly cheap.

 

I would suspect the brushes but may I suggest that the purchase of the brushes now would not be a "waste" as the brushes will at some future time need replacement anyway. I would buy them to have them sitting on the shelf (worst case scenario, for a year or so) so what when they do drop dead on you (and they will), your not waiting two weeks for the stupid things to show up. One opinion among many I'm sure. Another point would be the purchase of a new sealing ring for the starter (skinny thing that seals the motor body to the crankcase).

I wrote them about the same brushes twice in the span of two years and they have never responded back, they have been out of stock since I found them three years ago. Anyone else experienced this issue with these folks?

 

Parts and more responded back to my email in about four days. Not exactly timely but oh well. He said they are in stock so I placed my order. Just an FYI on what I ordered to get over $35.

I wonder what I've done wrong. Each time I hit their internet site, it tells me they are out of stock. ???? Maybe I need to use you as a go-between CJ. Oh yes! I was recalling the alternator brushes, not the starter brushes. My lousy memory. Sorry about that. I still say it is sad to advertise a product for years and not have it. Something wrong with that.
