So I've been working on my 1981 xj650 maxim project. I finally got the no spark issue solved now I started turning it over and I got it to start a few times but I noticed that sometime when I would press the start button it would do nothing for a few seconds then start turning the starter. Now when I press the start button it does nothing. No clicking or anything. I jumped the starter solenoid and the starter motor turns. Does anyone have any ideas. Does it have a separate starter relay? I opened up the control housing and it's a little rusty but not too bad. Any info will be helpful.

Sounds to me like you have some loose or corroded connections, possibly a ground. I would remove and clean all my connections to the battery, ground, starter. First, make sure the battery is good. Also, try jumping the battery from a car battery and see it starts. If so, bad battery.
