I actually have a motion pro synch tool....just didn't look up how to use it for the XJ yet.... I'll have to do that tomorrow. The only problem might be that I couldn't get it to start back up when I went out to try again :(

Hook it into the mainfold boots, there are plugs on three and the petcock goes onto one of em, you have to run the bike on pri on the petcock to be able to get fuel there. They say synch carburator 1 to 2, then, 4 to 3 and then the screw below inbetween 2 and 3 controls both 1 and 2 to get the same as 3. Basically synch all to 3 as it is not adjustable, except by the idle screw wich ups em all. Got it? lol, pick up a haynes manual or factory manual, lots of info you can take to the bike and work.

brawler - thanks for the info....

gameover - thanks for the pic. Is that a Nates bumper? I don't know too many people with one. I got mine off of a guy that picked it up for a buddy for like $240. I couldn't be happier since it's like 500+ on Nate's site...

It is a nate's bumper. I had seen them before. Wasn't paying $600 for it. Caught it on sale last year for $300. Couldn't pass that up.

No kidding... I love it. What did you paint yours with? I hit mine with Rustoleum ratter can bedliner along with the sides and back all the way up to the pinstripe under the door handles. I love it. Next is tacking the floor cancer, which I am going to spray with U-POL Raptor after it's fixed. If you've never used Raptor and ever have to bedline anything..... I HIGHLY suggest using it. It's $108 to your door in 2 days for the whole kit and it's tough as hell. I sprayed my TJ's bed with it before I sold it and picked up the XJ.

Love the flares by the way... I need to get some eventually.

Rustoleum rattle can. It's black hammer finish. Running 12.50's the flares are a must. I may recut the fenders soon and move them up. I can stuff a wheel into them if I try hard.

I painted mine with some semi gloss Krylon stuff at first, but it scratchd off WAY too easy, so I went with the bedliner. I love the finish of the rustoleum bedliner. Actually my XJ750 is getting painted with the same stuff. I finished up the tank yesterday.

What if I can't get the bike to idle anymore? How can I bench synch them, so that they are good enough to get the bike started and idling?

Some most basic FAQs really should get pinned up or moved to final FAQ, searching information is getting hard because there are so many topics with same questions over and over again

Crap.... that write up is nice, but I don't feel like taking the carbs back off of the bike to do it if I can help it :( I'm going to read a bit more to see if I can avoid doing that. If not I'll pull them back off and do it tomorrow morning.

no one else had any tips or tricks for me? I went out and looked tonight. Only the air screw on the 3rd carb is exposed. The rest still have that cap on them that needs to be drilled out. Should I bother or just leave them be?

You're confusing the synch screws and the idle screws. Both would need adjusted. The synch screws are in between the carbs and there are only 3. 1-x-2-x-3-x-4 x being the screws. Those control the blades. The idle screws under your caps control the fuel mix for the idle. Both of which require tuning to get you in the right place.

No, I'm not. I might not be wording everything very clearly, but I definitely know the difference between the mixture screws and synch screws.

I was just going to set the mixture screws to a generic 2.5 turns out to see if I could get it running good enough to synch the carbs. Now I'm reading that I might need a YICS eliminator tool in order to synch the carbs... crap.... another thing I need to buy and wait on. I might as well order that and a carb rebuild kit while I'm at it. Then I can do a more thorough job on the carbs, bench synch them, install, synch, and be done with it. I was just really excited to get this thing running.

I got one of the shorter shocks and should get the other one today :D Can't wait to see it dropped 2 1/2 inches.

Ok, so I got the manometer out and I'm getting ready to see if I can get this fired up and carbs synched.... I check the manometer and one of the restrictor dealios is not in the first tube... WTF? I don't know if it grew legs and walked away or if I trimmed a piece off the end of that tube and didnt think about it or what.... so now what do I do?

Never got the carbs done. I got a rebuild kit in the mail though, so that is next on the list. Cleaning them more thoroughly and replacing gaskets and all that crap....but for now I am thinking about what bars I want to go with. Let me know what you guys think. T or Z bars?

here are some pics a vendor just sent to me. The bars are the same except the z bars don't have the center section of bar.

    Bobber bars:
    7/8" T-bars(Dragbar w/risers welded on) : $75
    Specs:
-------middle section riser to riser: 5 1/4
-------they are about 6" tall and pull back about an inch
    -------they are 28" wide,
-------and of course you can just trim a little
off each end to make them narrower.

    7/8" Z-bar (Dragbar w/risers-no middle section) : $95
    (Same specs as the Tbars)

I just found another set of "T" bars on ebay that I might be able to get cheaper. They have the same dimensions except have about 1.5" more pullback.

Here is another style I was checking out and really like, but they are the most expensive by far.

Good news... I just met with a guy this morning that is going to help me with the XJ. He is going to help me hardtail it right away and no need to buy any bars, because he's going to make me some. :D I feel like dancing a jig I'm so happy.

Here are two bikes that he recently finished. The first one is an XS650 and the other one is a shovelhead. He sold the shovelhead for $3500 and the XS is up for sale for $2500 if anyone is interested. It looks even better in person. Really nice job.

I'm not sure how much I'm going to be able to do to the XJ right now. I laid my '90 gsxr 1100 down last night. Very low speed slid in gravel in a parking lot. I'm so retarded. I jacked up my forearm and foot with some rash and some bruising here and there, but nothing to get excied about. The bike didn't have the side fairings on it, because I was checking it out and took them off to access the motor. The upper fairing took some rash along with a small spot on the tail. Broke the left mirror off, ground down a bit of the bar end, snapped the clutch lever, but not even a mark on the tank and I was able to pick it up and ride it home. It's not going to cost too much to fix it back up, but to get the upper and tail back in nice shape I'll need to get it painted AGAIN... and I don't have the $$ for that right now. I was considering turning it into a street fighter, but really wanted to keep this bike fully dressed. Any othe old skool gsxr guys on here with some spare parts :D

I've actually got a friend who owns a bike shop and he just happens to have a gsxr 1100 in the back that a guy brought in to have repaired and never came back for, I can't get a hold of him until next weekend (he's out of the country), but if you can get me a list of what you need I might be able to help you out. I don't know if he will want to mess with it since he doesn't own it, but you never know, I mean it's been sitting there for over 2 years I don't think the guy is coming back.

that would be like a 12 hour drive for me....poop If the price is right I might be willing to do it or see if I can find a few people willing to each carry it a portion of the way and hand it off to the next like a relay race. If not I could just see if he could pull the needed parts for me and ship them.

Other than the damage, that is one of the cleanest 1100's I've seen, did you buy it like that or was there alot of work put into it.

go over to gixxer.com to the oil-cooled section. There is a thread in there titled oil cooled picture thread. If you want to see some CLEAN bikes spend some time searching through there.

My bike took a lot of work and still has a shitload to go until I'll be happy. Just little things here and there.

I'm looking at these levers right now.... think I'm going to gamble on them. Stuff from Hong Kong is definitely a gamble though.... oh well it will make me feel better, which I need right now :D

Those are pretty sweet, they remind me of the CRG levers I have on my track bike, but about a 1/4 of the cost.

Yeah, there is no way I'm putting out $200+ for levers right now. I WISH I could be as cool as you and get the real thing, but I'll have to settle for these asian knock offs :D

The Misfit decals were done by a friend who owns a print shop, that pic was taken at a calender shoot, I have one with a half-naked girl on it, but did know if it would go over to well on this site, but lets see. They blacked out the decals to avoid any copyright issues

still no updates here.... I'm still working on the GSXR bodywork to get it back on the road. Then the HEEP's floor needs done and THEN back to this project. I was just bored at work and going back through my thread.

I really want to get to work on this. I'm thinking of ditching the hardtail idea for now though and going back to just using the 10" shocks I got for it. That is IF I can find the other one. One is hiding from me at the moment :D

Yeah, I was going to sell those shocks to tank, but instead I just ended up ordering him some from the seller I got mine from, because I couldn't find the one :( Now that I didn't sell them I'm reconsidering hardtailing the bike now and just slapping those shocks on. I'm torn.... I need help making this decision.

I just emailed crath's build thread to the guy that is going to help me hardtail the bike (if I do it now) to see what he says about it. It really should only take a weekend, right? All I need his help with is the actual hardtail, seat mounts, and making me bars. The rest I'll do here and there in my own garage.

OR.... I'm searching for a welder, so that I can do it ALL myself. Decisions....decisions.... my head is spinning.

I think you should take a long hard look at the frame design of the xj, and how most people hardtail an xj, and then look at any other professionally built hardtail frame, or stock hardtail frame, before you just weld in the pipes to make it a "hardtail". I think, and I am probably putting my foot in my mouth, that the way that many people hardtail an xj is pretty crude, and just plain ugly. If you are going to do the work on something, do it right and go the extra mile and cut the swing arm out. I don't know why, but it really bothers me when people just weld tubes in to make it a hardtail.

Thanks for the advice. If I AM going to halfass it for now I'll be using the 10" shocks, but if/when I actually hardtail it I will be replacing the whole arse end....not just welding in two straight bars. I totally agree with you on the looks.
