OK, I think I need a valve adjustment job on my bike (XJ700N 1985). What makes me think that is that when I start the bike I can hear some pretty good clicking noise in there (which I suppose is the CAM hitting the valve lifters or something) When the bike is running it is a bit more difficult to say because now the exhaust and riding noises kind of overtake to clicking sound.

So is this a complicated task to do this valve adjusting job or not? I notice that we need a special tool for doing this job also. Is this still available? I am not a mechanic but I like working with my hands and I don't mind taking my time doing it.

The "wannabe" mechanic is looking for your advice.

I haven't tried doing my valve adjustments yet waiting for warmer weather . but there is a tool that is needed to measure and replace the valve shims

Do you have a service manual yet? look for the XJCD here . from what I have heard its a great resource for cross referncing parts. My bike isn't covered because its an XS and not an xj .

CdnXJRider, even though I havent done it yet, (waiting to have saved money for parts and valve shim tool), with all the information on this site, I dont think its going to be too complicated at all if you are in anyway mechanically inclined.

And as per Rickomatic, some valve noise is good, since tight valves are BAAAAAD on XJ's

Cdn, check out Gamuru's how to called Airhead Valve adjustment, it is in the FAQ suggestion forum. It will tell you everything you need to know on check/adjusting your valve shims. Like Flash said, these bikes have a natural valve tap that is normal.

I just got my '82 650 and did the valves a few days ago. Very easy, there are several threads that list what to do step by step.. I printed them, grabed a cold one, followed instructions and DONE. I also posted my results and several people looked to make sure i got the correct shims. I had to order a few shims from Chacal, awesome to deal with, super fast shipping!!! I put the shims in and rechecked and PERFECT!!! I did not use the TOOL I used a good black zip tie, doubled up, bent and taped... worked great and fast>>>

It's not hard, especially with the help of the experts here. It is time consuming, so put aside a good chunk of time so you aren't rushed. I replaced my gasket and helicoiled three stripped screw holes from the previous owner. VALVE JOBS ARE SO WORTH IT!
