Ride For Doug 2010 - Sunday, June 6th

    http://www.ridefordoug.com/

Announcing Ride For Doug 2010 - Sunday, June 6th, 2010.

Please take out your calendars, and circle the date. It's time for the FOURTH annual Ride For Doug - in support of those with Muscular Dystrophy.

Ride For Doug is an afternoon long (3-4 hour) ride through some of the best motorcycling roads in Langley, Abbotsford, and Mission. We explore "Sportbike roads at a cruiser pace". For a route description, click here.

The ride begins in South Langley (22nd Ave and 200th Street) with registration at noon. Riders briefing at 1pm, and then we are on the road. We end up right back where we started at 5pm for a BBQ dinner.

Last year, 75 bikes joined us on the ride, and we had a BBQ for 250 people! We raised just over $10,000 for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. With your help, we can do even better this year.

    Hi Everyone

I just joined the forums here. I picked up my first bike 2 weeks ago. Its an 82 XJ650 Maxim. I must say the forums are an awesome resource. I live in North Burnaby as well.

Right when i bought the bike it immediately need carb work as it was idling rough and lost all power around 6000 RPM. I did the work and its running pretty good, but its my first bike so i can only go off my previous car engine knowledge :p.

I have my full Class 5 license and my class 6 L. I will be taking my skills test hopefully on Monday, and then book my road test for the next available date. I don't have any waiting periods between tests because i have my class 5, so that's good.

I had found someone on craigslist who was going to go out riding with me this weekend so i could practice before my skills test, but i think hes flaked out on me.

Anyway, just thought i would introduce myself.

P.S. I attached a pic of my on my bike when i was buying it.

Welcome to the XJ world, Impulser91!

I am near Metrotown and am usually up for a ride, but I am in Ketchikan, Alaska right now.

Get in touch next week, if you need a ride buddy.

I'll PM you with contact details when I get home.

    Great looking bike!

    Eric

Welcome Impulser! Good looking bike - looks awful familiar...

If you guys set up another ride, please let me know. As Eric knows, I won't have to go far to meet, as I'm in north burnaby as well.

Perhaps the sun is here to stay, rather than the monsoon last time round.

Well my "supervisor" did bail out on me today, but has confirmed that he will be available tomorrow. If i can get enough driving in tomorrow then i will go for my skills test on Monday or Tuesday and can drop my supervisor and 60km/h restriction. So a cruise should be very possible in the near future, and i would definitely be looking forward to it for some of those awesome biking roads.

Hi, Impulser91. Sorry to hear your partner bailed on you.

I got back from Alaska late last night and I am ready to ride any night but this Wednesday.

Let me know how you made out and if you took your test or not.

    Good luck!

    Thanks plansea,

I was able to find someone off craigslist this morning who took me for my skills test and i passed :D

And then the guy who bailed on me this weekend called me up and said sorry but he had gotten stuck working and what not, so me and him went for a little ride on barnet and over golden ears into Langley and had some dinner. And i of course got caught in that stupid little rain storm. I bought all new gear online and it all fit except for the pants, so im just wearing jeans for the time being, which means i was dry except my legs lol.

So now my only restrictions are no passengers and daytime riding only, which is not to bad.

I would love to go for a ride this week if our up for it. It looks like rain tomorrow and Thursday and your busy on Wednesday. so maybe a Friday ride or something this weekend? Let me know what works better for you and we can set it up.

    Congrats!

Ok on the ride, I will stay in touch this week and perhaps someone else will want to join up, too.
I took the 650 Seca to work today and got home before the rain. It was cold, too!

All the best, I am being a bit of traitor to Seca's and have started polishing up my 81 Firecracker Red GPz550, the latest addition to the fleet

Okay, i got the bike all fixed and and shes ready to go for a ride.

Tomorrow is supposed to be cloudy and maybe some light spitting here and there. Other then that it might have to be a ride sometime next week, doesn't look like the weather wants to play very nice over the weekend.

I am pretty much free anytime so just let me know what works for you guys.

It's great to see another new rider...I'm waiting for a day off work so I can do my MST...whenever this blasted rain stops too. I managed to pick myself up an '82 650 Seca that I'm super excited about...and after a bit of tuning I think it'll be a dream. I managed to convince a friend to take me on a 35k ride around the 60k and under roads, and hopefully soon I'll be able to see how she handles at decent speeds.
One question I had for you folks is: Where do you get your parts? My master cylinder is leaking just a tiny bit and I'd love to replace/rebuild it...but where should I go?
If anyone feels like taking a new kid around for a ride let me know, I need to find more friends to get out with...the feeling of being on this bike is nothing I've ever felt before, and I'm hooked.

    Hi sydenham,

Well, i booked my class 6 road test for July 6th, so if you still haven't done your mst by then i can take you out riding if you like. Or if the other guys here get together im sure one of them will have a full license so you can come along. I guess its just a matter of us setting a date really.

Impulser91 and sydenham are you guys planning a ride? I am free on Saturday if you want to get together.

We better do it soon before I take the insurance off the Seca 650 and put it on the GPz550 :)

OK, good stuff! Where do you want to meet? I am near Metrotown, Willingdon and Imperial. I'll keep the insurance on the 650 Seca. When YVR650 and i have been riding together, it is pretty cool to hear the engines go in and out of sync when they are near the same RPM. 8 , 12 or 16 cylinders of XJ power sound great together.

    Meet: Saturday June 19, 2010 at 14:00

Where: Starbucks on Hastings, past Kensington in Burnaby (approx. 6536 east Hastings)

Why: it is next to a Petro can - gas and coffee

    Starbucks on Hastings in Burnaby

Anyone welcome to join in, the more XJ's the better!

How about a ride out east towards Ioca and Belcarra for a short run to work things out?

Well just make sure that someone is joining us who can supervise you. If you are still under the GLP then they have to be 25 years or older with their full class 6. If your not in the GLP ie, you have your class 5, then they only need a Class 6, no age restriction.

    Be seeing you guys soon.

Well, my buddy showed up to take me out...but he's pretty sure I would have to go over 60 for this trip, so I guess he's taking me for a spin and a bit more skills work. I will let you guys know when I can actually go on a full ride and maybe we can plan another one. I'm super excited to see your bikes too.

Hey guys, I just picked up my first bike, an 82 Seca 650 and I'm going for my MST on Tuesday and then my full Cl6 asap since I'm pretty capable of riding already and just need more mileage. I've already planned a few camping/day trips out and I'm really excited for it, biking is really addicting. I live in Surrey but I don't know anybody that rides so I thought I'd say hello in here and maybe meet up some time.

Planning to ride up to Kelowna soon but I'm just working on getting the bike updated. My first purchase of a bike and I didn't know anything about them so I'm fixing things that the PO never did and getting it into shape where I feel happy with it. Odd problems and the like. Fuel filter, fuses, new cables, etc. Where would you guys recommend I get tires from?

Hey Brandon, check the recent discussion on tires here: new tire forum.

I bought my rear tire a few weeks back at North Shore Yamaha/Suzuki. I bought the front tire late last fall at Modern Motorcycling on Commercial in Vancouver. They are matching Bridgestone Spitfires. Neither North Shore or Modern were cheap. Then again, I didn't think they were expensive, either.

Read the forum linked above and you will see what other tires the guys who know more than me recommend.

If you are out in the valley, I would recommend Western Powersports on the Langley Bypass...they were nice guys when I dealt with them years ago.

    Hey Everyone...

I guess its getting to be that time of year. Looking to setup another ride.

Also, could use a hand to rebuild my carbs before/afterwards.

I just moved to my new home in Port Coquitlam and finally have a garage. I remember someone mentioning that they had a sync tool and experience with the carbs on our last ride.

If your interested hit me up. My bike does run. I need to do the carbs, clutch, valve cover gasket, and front/rear shocks. I am hoping the carb job fixes its little quirks. But just the carbs for now.

    Hi,

I'm in Vancouver for the summer and looking to do some rides. I need to get my front fork seals replaced and I don't have any tools or anywhere to work as I'm staying with friends. Can anyone recommend a decent mechanic? I'm staying right near Modern Motorcycling on commercial, are they decent?

    Cheers,

    Tim

I had my front forks on my 82 Seca done at Duncan Motorsports. No problem getting the parts or the work done. No leaking now. $253 for parts labour and taxes. If the leaking just started, try the 35 mm film trick to clean the seal. I've fixed a leaking seal on my 'wing using this method and it worked like a charm.

    Azrael,

That'd be great. I did a google search for him but couldn't find a number.

    Rickinduncan,

It's been leaking since I got it and I'm pretty sure it's getting worse, but I'll look into the film trick.

I just called that number and got a very strange answering machine, so I took a drive over there. Looks like a completely residential neighbourhood, so unless I'm missing something I'm wondering if he's still in business. Azrael, when did you last deal with this fellow?

It was a one man business so it is likely run out of his garage. Haven't talked to him in a few months so it is possible he went under... Was a good guy so I sure hope not...

Otherwise I don't really know. We deal with Cypress motorbike quite a bit and they're good guys who work on the older bikes but I have no personal knowledge of their work.

On another note though, does anyone in Van have a colortune I can borrow for a week or two?

    Cheers
    Dave

    Dave,

I got a call back from Magik today and he quoted me a price of about half what I'd heard. He does indeed run his shop out of his garage. I'm bringing my bike in tomorrow and I'll post a follow up when I get it back.

    Cheers,

    Tim

I'm glad he is still around.
