Hi all. New here and I just picked up a 1981 Yamaha 650.
Is there a vin decoder to tell what the bike is, if it is an XJ or..?
    Thanks

Ok here's the first 6 of the vin

Thanks for the help, and I'm sure I'll be needing more.
Bike has just over 6000 miles on it, and was stored outside.
    It needs work.
Pulled the seat and was greated by a big mouse nest. after vacuuming that out, I found somebody had tken a few of the fuses out and flipped the one side of the holders over and connected them to the other side.
I put them back, and put fuses in them, But will be doing a little rewiring due to the melted insulation on them.
Made sure the wires wern't touching anything, put the battery charger on and she spins right over. Pulled a plug wire and checked spark, nice hot blue fire.
Pulled a plug, cleaned it, shot some starting fluid into the cylinder, put the plug back and gave the engine a spin. Fired right off on the starting fluid.
I won't turn on the fuel yet till I drain and rinse the tank. The old fuel smells so bad, I wonder how many years it has been sitting.
I also need to get the throttle cable/linkages free. They are stuck solid.
It will need tires, starter push button, front brake lever, headlight and ring that's what I have come up with at first glance. I'm sure there will be more.
I guess it would be called barn fresh, if it had been stored in a barn, or even indoors.

Welcome Stormin, looks like you have some work ahead of you.

I would also suggest that you pull the carbs off and clean them, old gas will cover everything with a nasty mess that will block fuel flow and the bike won't run correctly. You may even want to strip out the petcock and give that a good going over too.

The factory fuse block should be replaced with the modern ATO fuse block, many of us have done this. The old block gives too much problems and is one reason why the previous owner did what he did to it.

Good luck on your great find!

    Thanks Nick.
    I haven't ridden a street bike since 1984.
Wifes not to happy, but the price was right, and I'm a bit of a gear head.
I have now a 1972 Dodge Demon that I use for drag racing.
The street bike I had back in the old times was a 1983 550 Nighthawk. This bike looks very similar, and also has shaft drive.
It will be a good project, as long as the cost stays down.
I'll look into changing the fuse block on it. Thanks for the heads up on that.
I'll be doing a bunch of cleaning and loosening of linkages and such first, and a thorough inspection of everything.

Your welcome Stormin, I use to own a 1973 Dodge Dart Sport, keep wishing I still owned it!
    I haven't been on a bike since the late 70's early 80's.
I don't have a wife or any of the nagging any longer so at the moment I'm smelling up the house with paint fumes.

If you run into any problems/questions just ask, someone here will help out.
