Haha! Dude, I did the same thing first time I was going to try synching the carbs. Put the tank accross the frame, and the vibrations must have knocked it off. It had such a new and purdy color too...

Anyway, OT: Finally got to do the comp. check. I let the engine crank up the pressure this time, and got decent readings on all cylinders (way up at 135).

Went to install the valve shims i got from Len. Somehow my clearances have changed since i measured them 2k km ago :( but i was able to shift around to get everything in spec.

Also installed the new valve cover gasket and new rubbers for all 12 bolts. Wow did that ever suck taking all 12 of those off and putting the new ones on.

Plug #1 and 2 were just black when i pulled them, turned back the pilots a touch. (no wonder i was fouling plugs after 30 secs of choke)

Put the new clutch handle and bolt etc on, shifts much nicer now.

I'll put the spin on oil filter adapter on at next oil change.

Parts arrived today for my rear master cylinder (diaphragm reservoir), plan on bleeding all of the fluid from front and rear brakes. Maybe will have the old xj1100j ready for some fall festival rides, the covered bridge festival is coming very soon. Called Diamond Seat in Florida and they can make a touring seat for the bike, my wife and I will like that. Ride-on

Whole bike is now in a pile of parts. Cleaned the dirt/grease/gunk off the frame, side-stand, center-stand, and various little bits. Getting ready to paint frame. Next up will be cleaning the swingarm, fenders, and exhaust for paint.

Got frustrated to the point of .....well lets leave it at that.

I have the single baffle screamin eagle mufflers, and they
sound and perform like crap. I've tried a bunch of steel, brass scour pad combo's..,steel and brass together and now a washer at the pipes end with brass as a muffleing medium and she still runs a bit rough.

The performance is back big time. Especialy in the mid range!
and she is quieter. But runs like shes would if real low on oil.

The plugs look great but I tried them richer and leaner-no change.
Only one valve shim is off, .05 mm over .It was that or keep a
tight one in and Id'e rather she was on the loose side.

carbs are within .03 hg's ( .02 is the manual's mandate) and the idle
    is rock steady.

Now I know why manufactures put so much effort in exhaust
    design! LOL.

Disassembled the starter to see why it's running so well. Brushes were 11mm - very good, but the grease in the planet gear was dry so i cleaned it up and put in some new grease. Well in fact i cleaned it all up and now i hope to start the bike the next couple of years without any problems.

Definitely looked at my bike, then looked at all the ice outside, then cried a little.

I did however give it a thorough inspection, cleaned + adjusted the chain, in preparation for warmer weather next week,

I organized my tools on my improvised "shop" on my porch, with a special place for my german-made brand new torque-wrench. Ah, and fixed my paypal account so that I can order shims and other stuff from wemoto.com (UK).
I bought my xj400 late october/10, and I can't wait to have it running.
