I've use Kroil. A large can will last me a few years. You really don't need much of this stuff to do the job.

Took the time to pull the carbs and replace the throttle shaft seals. No big deal and the old seals were definitely leaking and old. No issues. I re-synched and color-tuned the carbs and and took it for a spin. Felt great - Hope is helps with starting. I uploaded a picture which was typical of each carb throttle shaft. As a side note I had rebuilt these in February and once off I could re-tighten the float bowl bolts that seem to loosen over time.

Did the bracket fit the carb? Or did you twist it like that?

That bracket is a duplicate idle speed screw bracket from a junk set of BS28 carbs. Yes, I twisted/bent it. The screw extender came from ebay with no means of attaching it so I improvised.
I'm sure it's from a later year Yamaha that had Mikunis. I'm doubtful it was off a FZR750 because they ran Keihin carbs mostly and the carbs were covered by a fake gas tank plenum. Who knows?
I knew the screw threads were the same so I snagged it for $12.00. I have trouble accessing the idle speed screw in its usual location plus it gets pretty toasty there also.
    Works great for me.

Pull them off the bike and install one. There are at least a dozen on ebay right now for sale. I just looked, seriously.
Pulling and reinstalling the carbs gets easier each time you do it, once you figure which way works best for you. You got this....

New throttle shaft seals did not help with hard starting when cold.

Check your valve adjustment, make sure your getting good spark, is your battery charged up completely and if it's really really cold where you live these bikes can be real twats until they are warmed up.

I will say I think I did get an improvement when the choke is off. Mine has never run for any duration with full choke. But now when I use the choke a few times then go without it I notice a longer very slow run as it is trying to warm up and I can lightly dial in some throttle. Yes cold here.

Sounds like you might have a vacuum leak or a screwy enrichment plunger. Something along those lines. The first thing to do is check your spark plug color and that will tell you a bunch of info. Without seeing the plugs, I'll venture a guess that your bike is a little on the lean side from what you've told us. Pull the plugs, get a new set and fiddle a bit with your mixture ratios or Colortune. If you don't have a Colortune, get one.
My finicky cold start issue went to starts with no or little choke after I bought a Colortune. Also I was surprised how much the mixture screw settings varied between each other.

Larry, that looks awesome! Saw your other thread where you got some ride time on it.

Wish I had more time to document all the stuff I've done or plan on doing.
In the meantime, here's a snap shot of the parts bike build after my 20 mile shake down run today:
    upload_2018-12-29_19-35-51.jpeg

I do have the "5 Valve" carb and airbox trim pieces. I'll be installing those after the final jetting when the weather gets warmer.
One of these days I'll do a build thread with close ups and details on all the mods and improvements.

I have the same one... warning, I had to tuck it farther up under the tank as the seat was pushing hard on the top of it even with the plastic plate removed from the seat.

hmm ill keep an eye on it. seemed like there was enough clearance to not have issues, ive heard of people also using seat spacers to lift the seat a few mm

    * Update *
Regarding the extended throttle adjustment knob installed during my carb overhaul:

The mounting point off the carb bowl screw didn't work out. It also created a conflict when reinstalling the carbs.
With the same mounting bracket flatten out and a larger diameter hole, the upper starter mounting bolt was replaced with a slightly longer one and the knob fits there nicely. Pulling and installing the carbs is not an issue with this mounting point. Just let it hang until the carbs are secured then install the bolt back on the starter. The idle is easily tweaked here, if needed.

nothing's better than going out a week later thinking you need to fine-tune one lean carb, only to find out... this time it runs purrrrrfectly. huh!?

As soon as them last couple brake parts show up, I can button 'er up and go for a spin around the block to see what she does!

Today I installed a blade-style fuse box and relocated it to beneath a side panel so I don’t have to wiggle wires getting at my air filter. The plastic housing adds extra weather proofing I hope.

Nice... I didn't think to put mine there, I assumed there wouldn't be enough clearance for the plastic side covers and never bothered to check. Everything fits ok?

The side cover snaps shut alright. It’s a little far from the battery and I didn’t have exactly matching wire so I’m sure it with be a PO discussion topic on this forum in the year 2062!

I don’t know your setup and I’m sure it’s fine, but I would never put a fuse box under the gas tank in case it ever sparks. I guess I’m just to cautious.

That’s a pretty neat trick. Probably adds some extra cushioning as well. The whole reason I did it apart from improving the reliability of the panel was to get at the air filter cover more easily. Then it dawned on me just a few weeks ago: there’s a plenum or opening behind the air box on the xj650 that I could totally be using for starter fluid (which I shouldn’t need EVERY time since using Len’s nifty drill bit on those buried starter jets) instead of removing the cover each time. I know spraying directly into the venturi is better, but maybe I’ve been doing it wrong. Do you guys just spray it down that opening? It’s how we learn, folks lol

Got this 750 Seca running today for the first time since the 80s. Cleaned carbs and refilled fluids,it was put away dry around 86,I got it recently and went through it cleaning carbs and adjusting everything.Gas on waited 30 seconds for the float bowls to fill and cranked and started instantly like it was never shut off years ago. Tomorrow will be a test ride around the local area. Currently has 14,994 miles.

Just got done fixing the faceplate on the speedometer. Broke in half. Super glue and a glue gun will hopefully work for awhile. Replaced tach bulb while I had it apart.
Thanks Hogfiddles for the thread on taking the unit apart. It was a big help.

Carbs cleaned and valve shims checked. Checked compression while I had the carbs off, 147-146-147-147 cold. I would suspect it would go up a bit when the engine is warm. Third set of spark plugs. The plug fouling I was having was being caused by the old spark plug boots. Put on some new NGK boots (I had already trimmed the wires back 1/4") and now she fires up instantly, even in the frigid cold we have here atm. Just need a carb sync tool and also set the idle mixture screws and she'll be ready to go... in a couple of months when the streets are bare.

Still need to try and pull the dent out of the right side of the tank. The rear pegs are missing, but I noticed that a piece where the left peg attaches is actually broken off (circled in red). Something else to find, I guess.

Been having trouble with the vacuum petcock, after disassembly realized that the fuel petcock is toast! :(
Contacted CHACAL, AKA Len and ordered the manual version.
I went with the manual version as I basically got sick and tired of repairing the vacuum fuel cock. 3 times in 5 years
While I had the tank off I cleaned the inside the best that I could.
Three days from order to arrival :D
Writing a paper for school and then I am off to rip around on my 1986 XJ700 X!:p

Stared at my Seca ,dreamed about 70 degree weather , riding winding back roads enjoying the sunlight , the smell of fresh cut grass ....and then realized it is -23 degrees out with -50 wind chill...went back in the house and read the forum at least I can read about something motorcycle related.

Took myself out on my Xj700 X yesterday for about an hour had a good ol' time, ;) looking forward to doing it again in about an hour!
Fuel Cock as referred to in the manual performed as exceptionally well, do need to mention that I have not gotten used to turning the valve on and off and as a result, I was riding and emptied the carb bowls of fuel LOL! Turn the fuel on dork at least I remembered to turn it off so not to flood the carbs or have fuel leaking into the crankcase. Should get a sticker to put on the tank to remind me LMAO
Ride safe the roads are covered with sand and grime. :)
