I tore apart the pod area. I removed the YAMAHA chrome bar, pulled the cables to the speedo and tach. After removing each cable, I took a test drive and the sound was still there.

I pulled the pod. I unbolted the pod, loosened some screws and looked inside.

There was a screw, on the brackets that hold the gauges in, that was loose. It was about half way out and the large washer behind it could spin freely. I spun it with my finger and Dang!, that was the sound I had been hearing.

I put blue loctite on all those screws and tightened them down. I took a test drive and the sound was gone.

So, I put it all back together again, and "That" sound was gone. But there is still a "Buzz" at 4000 rpm to 6000 rpm. I suspect the tach may be bad or hopefully the cable liner is out-of-round and is slapping around in that range. Cables are cheap and easy to find, so I'll go that route next.

I also bled the brakes using a power bleeder. Stopping power is as bad or worse, but the lever feels firmer. I'll change that cable later. In the meantime I'll spray some brake cleaner on the rotor and pads, since I did spill and wipe off some brake fluid from the rotor, and that might be lousing up my stopping power.

I admired my '83 XJ750r for a while then went and got gas to fill it. Had put the new tires on and finished mounting the wheels. Then ran the farm drive ways due to the paperwork going on to get plates :-( Will be great when I can venture onto the highways :) Bought the bike in Iowa and registering it in MI. Good to have friends to do legwork. I hate beaurocracy !

I ordered a new tach cable, a new clutch cable and a set of rubber boots for the levers.

Should be here in a few more days.

I officially put it on the road today! This was a total PITA as someone originally only put down 9 digits of the VIN # and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was a real PITA about it!

I had a LEO come over and verify the number and I was good to go! Now tomorrow I will get it inspected and then I can ride the snot out of it!

The last time I reg'd my bike here in IL I noticed that the previous reg. and title only have the engine number, not the full VIN that Progressive Ins. made me deduce from the rubbed-up sticker on the frame. I mentioned it and the lady said if I wanted to correct it, I'd have to fill out some kind of affidavit, take it to the police and have them confrm the new number, then pay to reg. it again.

I opted to leave well enough alone for now.

Oh, and today I kept an old blind lady from crashing into my Yamaha - that's what I did for her. Those air horns WORK! I think the lady had to go home and change her Depends.

Flushed fresh brake fluid through the front brakes

    Changed the oil and filter

    Changed the air filter

    Changed the rear gear fluid

    Changed the spark plugs

Put the battery on my battery minder, battery still had %60 charge after sitting for a month and having tried to start the bike when the carbs were on.

Now I just have to wait for the carbs, and I should be up in running in the next couple of weeks.

Changed the oil and filter. Pretty black...nice to get that old blood out. In with the new!

Put on new handlebars. Got some from Chapparals for 10 bucks or so that flatten out the grip. PUt some new grips on. Not sure if I like em or not. They also may be not allowing the throttle to close fully. I'll have to look into that further.

I love the ride with the new bars. Feel more 'in tune' with the machine. That is a great feeling.

Blew out the Air Filter with some air.
    Checked my tire pressure.

What I did do to my Queen today? Ah, I'm really exhausted now. 5 hours work today. Replaced the fork. Used my polished one. Polishing took me at least 6 hours to get the glance. But not looking bad now. Changed oil and filter too. I guess I'm coming closer to my goal with this bike. But after a test ride I noticed some kind of tick, tick, tick, tick coming out of the engine. This is really not amusing me! Looks like there is allways something to work on this Queen,

Today I've just cleaned out oil from the alternator and will adjust the clutch.

Over the last few days I've:

    changed the oil and filter
cleaned all wiring contacts and fuses
    adjusted headlight
    detailed cleaning and degreasing
    adjusted cam chain tensioner
    adjusted fork pressure
flushed (twice) and changed final drive fluid
    fix headlight circuit
    got signals working
    adjusted handlebar controls and mirrors
    cleaned air filter

And most importantly I made sure to take at least one "test ride" between operations. ;)

    Still to do:

    greasing axles etc
clean up front caliper to get both pads engaging equally
    check valve clearances
    sync carbs
    buy colortune and use it

And whatever else turns up as I work my way through those...

Thanks to the online help, my repair costs so far other than oil & filter:

    $0.00 8)

I do have a signal lens on order though, PO had broke one and glued it together, and I will need to buy a color tune and feeler gauges for some of the upcoming work.

Pulled off the wheels from the parts bike to get new tires put on the working bike. Adjusted the clutch. Attached some new mirrors and figured out how to pull off the rear brake.

Tomorrow: Get the wheels with new tires on the bike, reattach both brakes and get out riding :)

    Stankin":

    No Mid-range can be sneaky.

Nine out of 10 times it's plugged-up holes in the Emulsion Tubes.

You dive-in to the Carbs, again ... pull-'em out and look through all them holes and start scratching your head when you light shining through all them little holes and muttering begins!

Look at at Emulsion Tube, again.
See how the Top and Bottom have a larger Outside Diameter than the barrel part with all the holes?

That's because ... the space inside the Carb Body, surrounding the Emulsion Tube Holes is responsible for letting the AIR ... supplied by the MAIN AIR JET ... get sucked through those tiny holes ... to "Break-up" the stream of GAS getting sucked-up through the MAIN (Fuel) JET.

Use the long, BRASS, brush from a Gun Cleaning Kit to scour the Inside Diameter of that tube where the Emulsion Tube fits.

Try removing the MAIN AIR JET and snaking a Pipe Cleaner down the Main Air Passages as far as it will go

With the Emulsion Tube out ... shoot Carb Cleaner straight-in the Main AIR Jet or use an Ear Cleaning Syringe to flush the Main AIR Passsages with some straight SeaFoam.

If you've tried "Everything else" ... do this!

Might as well "Go for broke!"

    Good luck.

Today i pulled off the carb holders and cleaned them up really well. Time to put some of that RTV on em, because they are in REALLY bad shape on the outside. Also time to pull the carbs apart again and follow Rick's instructions on cleaning them out this time. Also my pilot screws are still covered should I drill them out and adjust accordingly. Thanks for all the help Guys

I made a YICS tool from the plans here: http://home.westman.wave.ca/%7Ejbe/YICS.htm

I also popped out my caliper piston using compressed air. Unfortunately, after a long day, I wasn't paying attention to where my finger was. OUCH! I got my finger stuck between the piston and the part that holds the other pad. I left some skin behind on the caliper and the finger is still numb.

Attention newbies like myself, be careful with this one. When the piston does finally come out, it FLIES. I was still smarting from my finger when it did come out. Luckily it wasn't in my direction. That's when I decided to call it a night.

I had recently replaced brake fluid and pulled out and cleaned the master cylinder guts. I cleaned both ports in the master cylinder. Lots of crud in there. I'm surprised the brake worked at all! Yesterday I replaced rear brake shoes and front brake pads. Front brakes are dragging. Pulled the caliper off and removed the pads. I kept pumping the brake and adding fluid until the piston popped out. Lots of crud in there too. Ordered a caliper rebuild kit. Today I cleaned up the piston and caliper, put the seals back in and will try to get the brake working tomorrow. The weather is way too nice to not ride until the caliper kit comes. Wish me luck.

Today I reinstalled the caliper and attempted to bleed the system. After a little swearing and pouting I finally attached a syringe to the bleeder and pumped backwards. I have very strong return flow. Way better than before I cleaned out everything. I don't have real good pressure though. I used to use two or three fingers on the brake and got all the pressure I needed. Now I have to grab a handful and pull back nearly all the way to the handgrip. The brakes release and don't drag anymore. I'll try to bleed them a bit more tomorrow and hopefully go for a ride. Supposed to be 32C (90F) tomorrow and I have the day off!

Pulled the cover off of the alternator to see if that could be the culprit of the chirping sound I'm hearing. A suggestion was made the it could be the bearing going out. Everything seemed tight and even when I pulled the stator off and started it I still heard the chirp. Can't pinpoint it's origination. I know it's on the left side of the bike tho.

Learned that you tear the gasket trying to get the cover off if you don't slack up the stator wire prior to sliding the cover off. DOH! Lesson learned.

    Repaired left mirror.
I've bought some truck mirror and went to glass shop. They done a good cut job.
Glued it with silicone on my mirror housing an now it is drying.

    Afternoon will do some riding.

Well, I put some more glance on it. Was worth to look in.... a lot of crap around the alternator. Brushes were short. Got better ones inside now. Made it clean inside too! I guess it's worth to check. 30 minutes to go. :D

Bled the front brake some more and got it to where it seems to be good. My neighbor says he has a brake bleeder (among other things. He charged my daughters air conditioning on her truck. Cost me three beer!) so I'm going to give that a try. Went for a ride and put on 100 miles or so. 160km for my fellow Canadians.

Great not to have to do anything else with it!

Also, got almost 51 MPG on the last tank (Rural highway, 45-55 mph, few stop signs).

Removed some crap eBay mirrors and put the OEMs back on.

I let it rest the weekend while I rode the big bike.

Going to change the Tach cable tonight.

I filled it with 91 oct fuel as usual & rode it to work today.

    Over the weekend however......

After fabricating/replacing the choke cable over the week end!! Went to local Yamy dealer to get/order new cable.... back ordered or maybe discontinued I was told... and they had nothing close.... so i ventured over to the local bicycle shop and purchased a $2.00 gear shift cable that had a similar end on it.... brought it home, cut off end of cable that wouldn't work, slid it into oem cable housing/sleeve and lubed. Then measured old cable length... marked donor cable, cut a little long.... cut a piece of Ø1/4" steel rod about 3/8" long drilled hole crossways in center of rod... slipped cable through and thourolly sodiered the two together, and trimmed excess cable. Filed off excess sodier and.....PRESTO.... new choke cable, works like new again!!
