I was expecting that the front brakes were going to be the original as you can see from the first pic they are replacements. :)
the second pic is of the new going in.
The third shows why one needs to do periodic maintenance. As I can tell by the wearing of the brake pads that the left font is not working properly.
I for see a caliper rebuild for both sides very soon.
I did however clean the calipers and various other pieces followed by some brake lube grease were applicable.
Yeah it only took 15 minutes from start to finish.

I checked the valve clearance. I just got the bike running this weekend . A week or so ago I changed 7 shims and so Ive started it quite a few times an d I wanted to see if it was still where it needs to be. Its close, a bit sloppy on one of the exhaust I could slide a .009 in it but with lots of drag on it. I need to get my manual on this computer so I can find out how to do the cam chain tension check/set and the timing.

Couldn't stand the high pitched squeal from the rear brake so I took the brakes off and look what I found.
IMG_0142[1].JPG IMG_0143[1].JPG Pics are of the front and back side of the shoes. Tried to use 220 grit to sand off the glaze but I think it is going to have to be turned on a brake lathe. Now the question is where, being as auto centers lathes are not big enough I am looking into truck stops to see If they can do it.
Yeah fun times and yes I ordered new rear shoes already and will be here by Monday the 12th.
Besides it is supposed to rain for the next two or three days.

Is it me or when ever I take something apart I find myself spending more time cleaning up that area then I do doing the repair?

I so often get distracted that way ... Hey, I should paint this while I have it off the bike... Oh, theres a bunch of old grease and grit over there...

I never wash my bike, but it's weirdly always clean.

Fixed one horn (other one still not working) fixed the clutch safety swx in the headlight and did a little taping of some electrical wires.

Funny that you mention this as I have a couple of them. Didn't give them much thought cause I thought I may make the drum out of round.
I did find a Semi truck repair shop that has a lathe that will handle the entire rim and tire. They are doing the turning today, price unknown ?
I will keep that in mind the next time I have to do this. Which I am hoping is like never.
I noticed a few rims on E-bay are like the front rim in design and they are 4lbs lighter then what I have now. The shipping was more then the price of the new rim LOL.

That would be the XJ700N rear wheel.

Went for a run on my XJ 900f today. Bike ran perfectly which is very satisfying because I had one hell of a job sorting out the electrics. Great bikes the XJ's are.

can anybody tell me what these tears are? This tire has only 1500 miles on it as with the front yet I noticed these on the rear.
    Cold tear
    Hot tear

As for the turning of the rear drum. I took a drill attachment with 80 grit and just went around and around till the glaze was gone. 10 minutes.
The shop said they could do it although they would have to remove the bearings.
I told them that I bring it back later on after I get a bearing removal tool and new rear bearings. I was thinking about when I had them replaced and that was 15000 miles ago.
So I will try again later when I get the proper tools and as I said new bearing.
Unless I get a xj700N rear rim which probably would need new bearings anyway just be safe.

That article about the true cost of maintenance rings like a church bell in my head every time I do maintenance. LOL
regardless I love my bike and wouldn't trade for anything. :p

Is this the only place on tire that has a spot like that? Have you been running over those painted white lines while hard on the throttle? I would guess it is normal wear if only in one spot. These is no cupping on the tire?

New grips came in today !!! Installing tonight and pumping the bars with caulking. Tough to find a specific butyl Rubber caulk. Looks like rain gutter caulking is as close as I can find.

no those marks go all the way around the tire both sides same area of tire- no cupping.
The first 10 or 15 minutes is just normal riding letting the tires warm up a bit. Avg. temp when I go to work 45+ F. Usually only hard on the throttle, by this I mean from a stop light to 10,000 rpms through 4th gear by then I am well above the posted speed limit then I shift and let her get down to posted and this is at about 445 am going to work on a smooth road. Tire pressure is 32psi front and back.

Went over the bike tightening bolts, lubing cables, and topping off fluids in preparation for a trip up to New York for the carb clinic!

Took my bike out for a 20 minute ride so far and the brakes do not squeal anymore. :)
Now it is raining sprinkling off and on, thank goodness my wife reminded me that I am not sugar and I will not melt.

Gorgeous sunny day - days after storms are always awesome days - so took a ride out to the local bike shop and ordered a complete engine gasket kit. I'll finally be able to do my valves(been afraid to pop the valve cover until I had a new valve cover gasket on hand), and it'll get my largely disassembled Seca engine together so I can do some compression testing on it too. Good times ahead!
