New shorty exhaust and painted the collector black. Also installed a black billet side mount license plate with lights. And painted the rear peg brackets flat black.

Finished up the fuel sight gauge and remounted the tank, filled brakes with fluid and did a bleed, will bleed again later today. I'll also be filling the crank case with oil, bike has been dry for a year while I've been working on it.

Gave the lower frame the best $7 paint job money can buy. Installed new rear brake pads. Found problem and solution to top steering bearing race tallness issue (allballs). Installed forks and found huge error in tightening torque in Clymers compared to Yamaha manual. Front wheel installed. Pumped out front brake piston for cleaning/rebuild. Installed valve cover and new gasket. Ordered a new chain.

Did what I do every work day, ride with a smile. I noticed that another member has 94,000 miles on his XJ. I feel pretty confident that mine will last as long. I am at 57,000 on my 86 xj700x.

Clean out the front caliper for new seal dust wiper. Is it my imagination or does this need to be done often on the 550s?

    Installed euro-bars.

Took a short 20 mile ride and really liked the new seating position.

Bike seems a lot sportier and takes a bit of the weight off my tailbone. Probably can ride more comfortably for a longer period now.

Not sure if I exactly like the bends of euros yet. I think I may prefer some SR500 bars.

Checked my rear brake shoes for de-lamination!
Changed my final drive oil while I was at it.

Replaced my standard H4 headlight bulb with high performance bulb 50% brighter according to the pack?

Replaced my speedo backlight bulb.

Installed some black on black 2.5" guages. They look pretty good, but I need to reroute some wiring to make it look nicer. Also, I overlooked the neutral light and its backwards (on when in gear, off when in neutral). But it works!

Put on a set of Progressive Suspension shocks and springs.
This went a lot easier than I thought - I don't own a 'spring compression' tool,
But sometimes I can be a pretty creative shade tree mechanic. :)

removed more rat's nest wiring around the tail light. PO had upgraded to a glue-in LED tail light but left a shiton of electrical tape and nonsense, all hanging well below the fender and looking like poop.

solved today with some nice male/female crimp-on connectors in place of black tape and rats nest...

seriously.. some people's kids, i tell you what!

Did a figurative forehead smack when I realized I installed the engine before installing the airbox. Removed the 2 right intake manifolds and managed to squeeze the box through. Luckily I have 4 manifold gaskets in stock. Installed new oil filter and O-rings. Ordered more parts and tools.

Reconnected all the wires I disconnected to remove engine. More forehead slapping: Realized I didn't put oil in the filter housing to prime the pump on start-up (the manual says so anyway). Cleaned the underside of the gas tank. I'm really looking forward to the performance enhancement of that last one.

Sektorgaz, I used a dremel with soft felt buffing wheels and three different compounds. I've been working on them a little bit each night after work. It's one of those projects you can do while relaxing in front of the TV.

I rode it for the first time in over 2 years. Over the previous few months:

Split the cases and fixed a shifting problem (long story)
    Replaced the forks
    New brake pads and shoes
    Bled brake lines
    New allballs headset
Upgrade to needle bearings in the swing arm
    New shocks
    New chain
    New plugs
    New air filter
    Adjusted valves
    touched-up frame paint
Replaced fuel line, filter and valve
    Cleaned carbs
    Synced carbs - morgan cabtune
    Set mixture - colortune
    synced carbs again

    It was a great ride!

I installed new master cylinder while I slowly rebuild my stock one and installed new brake lines too. It was easier than the troubling posts ive read about how long they take to bleed. Maybe it was because of the different master cylinder, either way not a bad or time consuming job.

I did the final (temporary, I plan on a full re-paint next winter)) paint on the front fender, following the repair of a minor crack at the leading edge. I picked the fender up off of the bench to carry it over to the bike for re-instillation, and saw.........another crack along the trailing edge [IMG]

The PO had craftily hidden both cracks with body puddy, and hidden the puddy under some very nice paint.

Bought a 31A replacement frame (yesterday evening)

If the rain stops I'll be stripping it into big chunks later, front end, back end etc & bringing the bits indoors so they can be stripped/cleaned/refurbished as required ready for the re-incarnation...
