Finally found and installed a new (to me) windscreen. Last one broke last fall when the bike blew over in a wind storm.

Sanded the DOT numbers and letters off my 81' 650 Maxim's taillight lense and reflectors and polished them.

    Nice but subtle detail.

Well I finish up today. Spend the last 3 weeks taking care of some issues. First was my exhaust gaskets. Got new ones. Rode. Then my starter went out. Got a rebuild from chacal since mine was past rebuilding. First ride after that my front shocks went out no return after I hit a bump in the road. Rebuild. Second ride after that had a problem with my chain. No problem new chain and sprockets. Put it all back together and my rear brake arm and rear brake cam threads were all stripped. That's not good chacal again saved me. And while I was at it some new shoes. Took here out for a short ride and everything seems to be working pretty good.

O ya lots and lots of cleaning and polishing.

Still have lots to do but it's on the road again.

Giving the color a last attempt before I farm it out. The tins in Sonic Blue.

If I get the little air box side covers good, I'll give the rest a go. I put another coat of primer on, hope to be able to wet sand them with a degree of success tomorrow!

ZERO acceptability so far in prime.

Finally did carbtune and colortune on the carbs. Changing main fuel jet from 120 to 122 was the best thing I've done for the bike. I'm running 4 to 1 exhaust and was having to turn the air/fuel mixture needles way out to get a good setting. Now I don't have to do that!!!

Put in a fuse box from Chacal and fixed my blinkers yesterday. Now to start rebuilding the brakes. Have new SS lines, pads, rear caliper rebuild kit and a new front master cylinder. Waiting on the front caliper rebuild kits. Any tips on the brake rebuild?

Put new rear tire on, Dunlop D404.
Remembered to write down milage! :)
Regreased splines, shaft and rear brake pivot points. Reset rear brake pedal free play.
Torqued axle bolt, but at 77 ft/lbs the castle didn't align with the cotter pin hole . ended up just over 80 ft/lbs. not a concern - right? :?

Next time back the nut off instead of tightening it further. Stripped threads are no fun to fix.

Replaced broken clutch cable and also replaced choke cable (it's 33 years old as well).

Plan on letting these settle/ stretch in before replacing the 33 year old throttle cable. Don't want too many variables to worry about; understandably the choke is only a concern during cold starting.

I was busy working on my car all week, but today it started raining at 4am and hasn't let up since. So off to the shed I went to work on the bike! Nothing major today, just the front wheel bearings. The old ones were feeling a little knotchy, so I can't wait until the rain lets up to go for a ride!

Oh yeah, the bike did strand me last week. A guy in a white Camry cut me off on the highway, so after braking and getting his attention, I went to downshift, only to hear and feel the POP! of the clutch cable breaking. A couple expletives later, I rolled the bike into a dry cleaner parking lot (10pm) and got my roommate to pick me up so I could grab my spare cable and a couple wrenches. So it came to pass that Smack swapped out a clutch cable in the dark in a sketchy part of town.

I broke my clutch cable in an attempt to lubricate it, the bike being in my shed. Better there than on the road.

I finished rebuilding rebuiding my front forks last week and my MC yesterday. Calipers are the next step. It should be road worthy by the end of August...

Finished the install of tapered steering head bearings. Funny how those little, tiny notches can feel so deep on the old, ball bearing races. All better now. Ride a bit, adjust again and be all ready for Jack Cole's Covered Bridge Vintage Ride in Walton, NY in a few weeks.

hmmm...got on it, turned the key to on, hit the starter button, bike idling at 1100 rpm with no choke needed. Put on helmet and took her for about a hundred mile drive up and down the coastal A1A on the east side of Florida. Bike performed flawlessly and ran like a finely tuned machine. Stopped off in Flagler and the bike drew much attention. One guy asked if I owned the bike from new and I said no, only for about a year and a half. Felt good to see all the Rolex Riders slobber over an old XJ. He asked who do the restoration, and I told him the Wizards of XJBikes with the help of Chacal of XJ4Ever. He looked a bit confused, but I explained it to him.

Advice? It is only cheap when the receiver ignores it. But then again, you can never help anyone who won't help themselves first.

Time for the pool...and the beer....see ya guys

Bike didn't wanna start today. Instant expletives. Didnt take long to determine she wasn't getting spark. Coils showed no resistance. Took them off the rack, both are basically cracked in half. Luckily, my neighbour works for an auto shop so I got a wicked deal on a couple Dynacoils.

Waiting (im)patiently for them to arrive, I replaced the rear wheel bearings, swapped sprockets, new chain, mounted my new BT45. The weather is beautiful, and my anguish is immeasurable.

I had to repaint my bike... (not due to a dump or crash)... The paint shop suggested and I agreed to a color from the "Jaguar collection" and it is called a Pearl Yellow - pic of a Jag in the color chosen also seen below... I know "yellow" is an unusual (if never used) color for these bikes, but I very much like the result:

    Wow DM that is nice.
I've been considering going laser Blue.

But for it to look right, I think the fenders would need to be painted as well and I don't thing I am ready to do that yet.

My Clutch basket exploded the other day. I would attach a pic but I can't seem to get that working right now.

    Gotta run!

I wet sanded the rear wheel inner drive cover in prep for a better coat of paint. I was gonna let the slightly more rough surface slide on something no one else will EVER get that close to but....

Yeah Dave, the fuses were the first thing I thought. I upgraded them all to the blade type over the winter, and they were all fine. Battery was next on my list, but it showed 12.8V, so I figured that wasn't it. No kinks in the fuel lines, but I smelled gas. Pulled a plug, held it to the block, nothing. Pulled the rest, nothing. Figured it was either my TCI or the coils. Tested the coils with a multimeter, both their primary and secondary resistances were waaay out. Pulled them off the bike and saw massive fissures running up both cases.

Over the last 2 months I have rebuilt, stripped and painted my saddlebags. They had been off the bike for about 2-years. I pulled my hair out for the last 2 weeks trying to find the mounting hardware I removed. Came across them yesterday while looking for something completely different (my glass-polishing kit). Got them assembled and mounted to the bike.

Put the dynas on last week, but it's been too hot to resync/colortune lately. I was up early this morning, went for a 85k ride, came home, synced and tuned, just before the rain clouds rolled in.

    Aaand now, breakfast :)

Tube handlebars and risers; custom seat foam and new cover (by me); stock mirrors; new front brake master cylinder (to fit new bars), front light bar and low-wattage lights; removed heavy license plate holder and replaced with aluminum square stock; fabricated longer rear turn signal brackets so my soft luggage wouldn't hang on rear signals; painted tank, side covers and grab rail Mazda blue (almost the color of the website header); new clutch and throttle cables; Bridgestone Battlax BT-45 front and rear (sport touring tire that, astonishingly, comes in our sizes); new Barnett clutch.

By removing and replacing parts, I've saved over 15 lbs. and plan on putting more parts on a "diet". She ain't stock no more!

new exhaust gaskets, drilled out my old pilot jets from #40 (.4mm) to now #45 (.45)mm and will add another vinyl washer to main jet needles. Running lean up to 1/2 throttle. Still no battery charge. New brushes on stator. Gonna try flow chart now.

Yup, that happened. Was on a 600k trip, at 590 I heard a weird noise, but it was familiar because one of my exhaust flanges was loose last week. So I kept riding anyway, figuring I'd just tighten it up when I got to my destination. I know, I know, big mistake, lesson learned. Luckily, there was a wrecker a few hours away who had the missing parts from an 81, He put them on the bus that night, and I had parts first thing in the morning. Big, big, big standing ovation to New Life Cycles in Williams Lake, for those in western Canada.
