Hey Midnite......again, check to make sure that the pivoting mechanism WITHIN THE CALIPER BODY (bolt, sleeve, and the bored hole with the caliper body that accepts the sleeve and bolt) is not seized up or "tight"......this is a common problem on the 650 Maxim/Midnight Maxim (and XJ1100 rear caliper), these models use a unique caliper mounting system and the proper "floating" operation of the caliper depends on it being able to pivot freely left-and-right around the mounting/pivot bolt. Take it apart, sand the sleeve and the bolt shaft, lube it up really well, re-install, hopefully problem is fixed!

But of course, check that pressure relief port in your reservoir, too!

The brake lines on your bike aren't probably bad, they are bad. Brake lines have a useful life of 4-5 years. I know that "no one ever replaces them", but, some people re-use old valve shims, too....... :D

All of the lines that I offer are exact replicas of the original, meaning two pieces for your model, in either the original rubber or in the s/s braided versions. So the connector joint must still be used.

Thanks for the info. I'll check out what you mentioned with the caliper.

I didn't know I could get the rubber hoses anymore. I guess that would keep the bike looking the most original.

I'll look through your site to see what I can find.

I still need the screws for the master cylinder cover too. It will be a good time to replace those.

Somehow we made it worse. Went to change the seals and oil in forks. Now the blinker doesn't work and neither do the forks.

Explanation...Ordered new seals from local yamaha dealer. They accidentally ordered ones for an XS not an XJ. So why didn't we put them back on. Well they were more rustified crap than actual seal. Probably why it was leaking a bit. As for blinker I have no idea why it stopped working. We were going to put a new windshield I stole off the shit that has become my husbands buell. Least I could save one part. That aside it didn't fit.

So all in all we changed the handle bars back to my clubman ones. And messed everything else up. Sigh wait for parts now =(

Cleaned her up, re-oiled the K&N air filter, flushed the radiator and refilled it with new coolant. Changed the gear oil in the rear end. Grabbed the wife (not what you're thinking) and went for a short ride, approx. 75 miles. Life is good!

I finished measuring the valves clearences that I could(the intake had clearances smaller than .004" so I had nothign to measure them with) pulled the cams out and read all the little numbers on the valve Pads then looked at hos much they cost and looks like it will be awhile before it will be back on the road. sigh and to think I started this whole mess with just hey lets clean the carbs again since it is spring and I have been riding it for two weeks.

I rode it for the first time this spring! 8)

I spent the last part of the winter changing valve shims, replaced the valve cover gasket, and rebuilt the carbs. Last weekend I built a four line manometer ala Hired_Goon and synced the carbs.

It's the first time I've done any of this stuff so today's ride was a sweet victory! It's never run smoother and the idol will hold steady @ 1050 for days. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get a chance to use my new colortune plug and see what fine tuning is all about.

rode mine to work today. this was my longest trip so far (20-ish miles)
a few issues to work out...(random slipping of the clutch, but only under initial hard acceleration) other than that, i had an ear to ear grin when i got to work. now the ride home, that was another story altogether. had to leave work a little early, because some ugly weather was coming in, and i don't know how ready i am to ride in the rain just yet, and then i hit the weather anyway...and it wasn't rain...

the weatherman didn't say anything about snow today...at least the ground was nice and warm, so nothing stuck.

Hehe... wow, we're almost in parallel universes here, BikeRanger. I'm at the point of taking the motor out. Then I'll just have frame and forks. Until yesterday, I was feeling a little "in over my head", but then I organized my tools and the removed parts, and I'm feeling much more in control today. We can do this!

Are you planning to rebuild or check out the motor internals?

Yesterday installed Accel 7mm copper core plug wires using the "dremel and opening up the coil" method. re assembled and it looks great ... the yellow wires really grab your attention. 1500 miles since my last tune adjustment, performed a plug chop and enriched the mix 1/4 turn.

Drove her into work today, feels like i may be getting close to a clutch job. averaging 95 miles a day now. averaging 42Mpg

    Popped new 750 tank on...
Changed those Fuses!!! Everyone of those fuses was 20A except the Battery/Live one.. it was 15A.. Smacks head.. what the hell was the PO thinking. and 2 of them were inline fuses/holders, which when I went to remove, they just undid in my hand with no effort. I don't know how the hell I rode it like that last year!!! Needless to say new Blade fuse holders in place and Bike's Happy =)

Next, fill the tank up =)

Got my powdercoated parts back (rear footpeg brackets, grab bar, intake manifold, and fuel rail); installed some of the parts; pulled the valve cover to check clearance (2 valves too tight - parts on order from Chacal).

The manifold, especially, came out great.
