Very productive day! Finished up with the headers and collector, got the headers wrapped, changed exhaust gaskets, reinstalled the headers and collector.

Painted my muffers, as they're pretty banged up and have lots of rust spots, as well as repaired my side covers and grab rail. Painted stuff is still in the basement though as it's decided to rain.

Replaced a blown rear shock with a good one, so the suspension should be a lot nicer now.

Did a bit of a test to see how the XJ sounds without mufflers....

Aaaaand.... Now I don't know if I'm putting those mufflers back on, or just slapping on some baffled straight pipes. I love how that sounds and it's way quieter than I expected.

Well, took it out for a spin today now the exhaust gasket rtv had some time to set.

Sadly, "way quieter than I expected" only lasted until I had the engine under load. That 750 is loud when you wind it up without mufflers.

So... yeah, while I'd be ok with "louder than it was", I'm less ok with "my neighbors will kill me." Sadly, this means the mufflers go back on today.

Still gonna try some pipes with baffles, though... just definitely using baffles. I'd love to keep that deeper note without the volume.

Once you have some pipes on there moving the sound behind you it wont seem so loud.
I usually keep the rpm low until i am away from the neighbors then let her rip.

Umm....the stock pipes are baffled. No packing in them at all.

I don't have the stock mufflers. They look stock, but they're aftermarket slipons and in mediocre shape. I've got a stock pair downstairs on my other exhaust, but they've got rusty holes in the bottom.

I'm not after loud, but I do like the lower note of the open collector. So, I'm going to try with a couple short but wider diameter pipes with baffles, to see what that sounds like.

How about a longer video with those pipes off or the pair you have installed

will do with the now re-installed mufflers for comparison.

Definitely will once I've got the new pipes as well.

    Synced carbs today-
tried out the Gunson Color tune seemed as though I got more sparks from around the adapter then I did inside the cylinder. :(
tried to adjust fuel mixture on the number 1 cylinder and messed that up. Anybody know how far to turn the fuel mixture screw out ? From the seated position ?
I need a good place to start from_Sigh
That is what I have done today beside riding to work and back.

Is that a full turn as in one complete revolution 360 degrees of brass screw
If that is correct mine are way off-number four cylinder was only a quarter turn from the seated position.
UM maybe that is why I was getting such good MPG I was starving her of that premium fuel she likes so much.
    Thank You

Installed paper fuel line filter. It has a clear plastic case. (Briggs & Stratton ). Couldn't pull fuel line off petcock after much effort so I just cut the line at the right place with tank raised up about 5" and put the filter on. There is actually a fair amount of space under the tank for one of these filters. A bit larger than the usual filter used on these old yamahas.

Paper filter is too restrictive. It won't allow enough fuel through to feed four hungry carbs. It can cause your bike to "run out of gas" even with a full tank.

Finally solved my "creaky" front brake. After new SS lines, redoing the caliper pistons, bleeding the line this spring, the brake worked. However, it was "creaky" in that it was "notchy" when I squeezed the brake lever. Thinking it was caused by sticky caliper piston, I took the caliper apart about 5 times trying to figure out what was wrong. I was about ready to spring for a couple hundred bucks to buy a refurb caliper from Len.

Early this week, I finally realized, "Duh" - the "creaky sound" as coming from the lever/master cylinder area, not the caliper. Turns out the piston underneath the master cylinder needed a shot of lube. I remember I had accidently dribbled brake fluid down the side of the master cylinder. It probably got in there and was causing stickiness. A shot of lubricant on the lever pivot point and into the master cylinder piston (not sure if that is the correct term - it is where the lever adjustment screw presses into the master cylinder) and the front brakes are once again silky smooth.

Sometimes the problem area isn't where we think it is. The fun of diagnosing.

My Colortune did the same thing. Try some black tape or shrink wrap around the end of the adapter and porcelon. That was actually the "fix" that Gunson told me to do via email.

Took the old girl to a local upholstery shop to price seat recovery as mines tearing.

With a full recover and foam modification (getting rid of the hump in the middle so I can sit back further) it'll be $125 CDN, and take a day. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Hopefully next week I can have it done.

It doesn't look like it is going to happen this year. In September I'll be getting a couple of surgical procedures which will put me on disability for a while. Money will be tight, and the riding season will most likely be over. Until next year, I'll just bitch and complain.

Today, I put the rebuilt master cylinder back on, and my new braided stainless brake lines - most of the way. I'm stuck waiting for next paycheck to buy caliper rebuild kits. I'll spend the time kicking myself in the keister for not using the brake lever to push those pucks out. But... another weekend closer to gettin' her on the road!

...Annnnd grumbling after spotting more damage from the bike being dropped at some point. The throttle handle is cracked up right at the endcap. I didn't see it when inspecting. I have a feeling the guy put a dab of glue or something in there to hold it down, and it finally melted away in the Arizona heat, for me to see. That's ok... in a couple paychecks or so, my loss will be Chacal's gain! ;)

Investigated cause of non-returning shift lever. Replaced the shift lever return spring and the shift torsion spring; although neither was broken.? Replaced anyway.

    IMG_3048.JPG

Maybe something wasn't installed properly? Couldn't tell for sure because the return spring mechanism and pawl came out with the cover.

While I had the cover off, thought it would be the perfect time to polish it up:
    IMG_3054.JPG

Also of note, there wasn't a gasket present on the cover; just some gasket sealant. Was this normal from the factory?

Replaced side case and new gasket after replacing shift lever return and torsion springs yesterday.

Took it out for a test ride... shifts beautifully! and.... no oil leaks from case.

With a previous post by someone else that has a recalibrated speedometer (labels over the numbers) in mind, strapped my phone on using a speed checker app. Everything up to 55 is just about right on.

I put it between the positive terminal on the battery and the white red stripe wire. Rooster53 has a good write up on it here. He calculated that the 5.6k will trip the warning at about 11v, so it will still give you a heads up if something is wrong in the charging circuit.

I would like to say yes but no. I am the third owner.
Original owner bought the bike brand new and logged on about 42,000 before he sold her to a young kid who only rode it for one season here in Southern Oregon. Got a DUI and needed the money so I picked her up for 1300.00 with 44,000 thousand.
I have had her for close to five years now and put 24,000 on myself.
This is also my first motorcycle I have ever owned.
I also have had to rebuild the top end due to lack of valve maintenance from Previous owner. 44,000 miles past the recommended valve adjustment. Other then that no problems other then tires LOL.
