What is this cover and do I need a gasket for it?

    Hi everyone.

I have a XJ550 where the cover on the right side is busted. I think someone dropped in the past and just plain broke.

Since I'm not much of a mechanic, but from what I googled its the cover for the oil pump. Is that correct? This is the right hand side.

Also, I'm guessing there should not be a gasket there? This bike has been sitting for a while and has not been started, but its oil in it, but I'm thinking if I start it, it might leak. So better safe than sorry I guess.

Thanks all from a new XJ550 owner. (A good view to show that there isn't a gasket is the "Under picture".

Yes you are correct, no gasket under that side (only the matching left side "YICS" cover does use a gasket). If it leaks oil from there, it means the seal (actually, a block-off plug) in the crankcase is leaking and should----depending on how bad it's leaking----be replaced.

There should not be fluids behind that cover, so nothing to leak. On my 900 I don't recall there being a gasket the first time I took it off, but I did add one just to keep moisture out. Not sure if it had one originally. The left side did.
