It seems WOOT has it backwards, higher octane would tend to retard the completion of the burn, which should complete during the "quench" when the piston dwells at TDC ; the piston actually stops !
My 750 Seca says 91 Leaded also, but I run 87 with no problems.

    And it's Research method + Motor method over 2 R + M / 2
What they don't tell you is that these methods are both on controlled, experimental motors in lab conditions under ridiculous conditions.

Expect more ethanol in the future. . a knocking motor is a dying motor

im not to sure about all the tech stuff it does seem a lot of our side covers say 91 octane and leaded gas, i know when i use to run my car at the drags the higher the octane the better she did hell we even put jp4 for dragging on not much of a modified 350. Big Difference! our regular gas here is 85 octane, i havent got my bike road legal yet but here in a few weeks i,ll probably be running regular gas with a octane boost and some lead substitute, i,ll let you know if i blow her up or not

Hmm, I remember when mid grade was introduced back in the 80's. A lot of people who were burning regular gas suddenly began to have knocking problems. A national consumer affairs tv show did a report on it, and it turns out, there was no new mid-grade gas. The oil companies simply came out with a crappier grade of gas, called it regular, and renamed the old regular, mid grade.
