On the DC beltway everybody drives over 70. The cops can pretty much ticket anybody they want to. They picked me once and if it ever happens again, I'm taking it to court.

Since we're on the subject of traffic violations, what really irks me is that I see police officers routinely doing everything I've ever gotten a ticket for -except with complete impunity.

Too much hassle for most folks to even consider:

1.) Sign away all your common sense
2.) Develop a hatred for all motorcycle riders trying to turn left
3.) Cultivate a highly refined sense for randomness. This will help you as you begin your working career when it comes time to set the cycle time between lights.
4.) Learn to consider only 1 variable at a time. You must learn to never consider how stopping traffic on the main thoroughfare to let one car on a sidestreet enter traffic impacts the timing of the rest of the signal lights between this intersection and the freeway on ramp. A bad traffic engineer would consider the correct time to turn the light green on the side street so that the cars on the main road wont have to stop at every light between the intersection and the freeway. See P 1 and 3 above

This is only a starter list of what it takes to become a traffic engineer.

Wouldn't it be nice if they actually took suggestions from the public for improving traffic flow. I've got a freakin' ton of ideas.

Yeah, speeding's always been my big vice. I drive with consideration, I signal all of my turns and lane changes, and I go 20MPH over almost always. It's not even that I need to get anywhere in a hurry... it just feels really good. So far, I've been lucky and the cops have been understanding when they've stopped me. So, no tickets yet... fingers crossed.
